Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Auerbach adds five goals, but Eagles edge out Owls

GAMBIER, Ohio – First-year attack Ashley Auerbach fired the best game of her young career on Friday afternoon as the Kenyon College women's lacrosse team took on Mary Washington from the Field at Benson Bowl, but it was not enough to stop the visitors from building a lead and never letting it go, dealing the Owls their fifth loss of the season.

Auerbach scored five goals to shatter her previous career high and added best marks in shots (6) and shots on goal (5) to keep Kenyon in the mix, but the Eagles came away with the win in the end 14-8.

After Lily Mason scored her 13th goal of the season to put her first on the team and give the Owls an early lead at 12:56 in the first, Mary Washington commanded the field and charged to an 8-0 run over the next 20 minutes of gameplay to grab the advantage and then some.

Kenyon's drought ended with Auerbach's first and second goals of the day, finding the back of the net within a minute of each other to send a 9-3 score to the half as Mary Washington broke through once more to end the first 30 mins.

The Eagles opened the second half with three straight goals to take a 12-3 advantage, but Auerbach struck again with another quick pair. The Ridgewood, New Jersey native scored twice on free position shots to cut the lead to 12-5. She scored again for her fifth tally of the day by way of an assist from Charlotte Skelly, but after three quarters the Owls trailed 13-6.

Spencer Kirsch and Mason each scored in the fourth, finding the net in the final two minutes, but it was too little too late, as the Eagles took the game 14-8.

Auerbach led all scorers with five points and five goals in the career outing. Kirsch turned in a team high two ground balls, while on the defensive side of the ball, Cecily Torres led the way with two caused turnovers. Nola Garand made 10 saves and helped generate a 16-of-17 (94.1 percent) clip on clears.

Kenyon will head to Berea, Ohio for its next contest on Wednesday, March 26 to take on Baldwin Wallace at 7:00 pm.
