Owls salvage split in home opener with Tartans

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Playing through some cold and windy weather, the Kenyon College softball team held its 2025 home opener on Saturday and wound up splitting a doubleheader with Carnegie Mellon University. The visiting Tartans took game one, 10-2, but the host Owls bounced back to claim a 4-3 game-two victory.

The split moved Kenyon to 12-4 overall, while Carnegie Mellon updated its record to 3-9.

Game one did not get out to the start the Owls hoped for on their home field. The Tartans smacked back-to-back singles off Kenyon starting pitcher Kylie Hamm in the opening inning. A couple of stolen bases, an error, and an RBI groundout then put Carnegie Mellon up, 2-0.

Meanwhile, Kenyon could not get its bats going. Through the first six innings of play, Tartans' starting pitcher Haley Pucci held the Owls to just one hit, a third-inning triple from Keala Montgomery.

In the top of the sixth inning, Carnegie Mellon blew the game open. Three straight singles led to one run and then three more runs came home when Faith Lawrence blasted a home run just inside the right field foul pole.

The Tartans put four more on the board in the top of the seventh to move ahead 10-0. In the bottom half of the final inning, Kenyon avoided the shutout by scoring twice. The Owls got a leadoff single from Natalya Delsante and that was followed by a pair of walks that loaded the bases. Brooke Avila then singled home Delsante and, later, Montgomery drew a walk, one that pushed home Kinsey White, who also got on base via a base on balls.

In the nightcap, Kenyon salvaged a split with a one-run win.

Amanda Harris was the Owls' starting pitcher. She tossed a little more than four innings and picked up the win to run her record to 4-0. She cruised through three innings, gave up one run in the fourth, and got into a little bit of trouble in the fourth before Izzy Akin came on in relief and worked out of the jam.

Harris yielded three earned runs on nine hits and a walk. She struck out three. Akin picked up her first collegiate save by holding the Tartans scoreless over the last two-and-two-thirds innings. She gave up just two hits, didn't walk a batter, and struck out a pair.

Offensively, Montgomery got the job done for the Owls. After going 1-for-3 with an RBI in game one, she went 1-for-2 with a run and two RBI in game two.

Kenyon took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of third when Sophia Lynch doubled and was replaced by pinch runner Morgan Gardner.  Gardner moved to third on a groundout and scored on a Montgomery sacrifice fly that was lifted to centerfield. The Carnegie Mellon defense then made back-to-back errors and Madison Buckwalter made them pay with an RBI single up the middle.

The Tartans responded with a run in the top of the fourth, but Kenyon fired back with two more in the bottom of the frame. White, who played stellar defense at third base, got things going with a double. She moved to third on a passed ball and then made her way home during an RBI groundout struck by Montgomery. After a wild pitch, Montgomery moved to second and was later driven home by an Arianna Jalomo single that capped the scoring for the Owls.

Kenyon's games at Earlham College, originally scheduled for tomorrow, were postponed. The Owls won't be in action until Sunday, March 31, when they host University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg.
