Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Owls fall just short of weekend sweep

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --  Consistently playing nationally-ranked opponents, the No. 16-ranked Kenyon College men's tennis team got a bit of a surprise Sunday, as it concluded a grueling weekend with a 5-2 loss to the No. 28-ranked Cardinals from Wesleyan University during neutral-site play at Christopher Newport University.

Friday, the Owls earned a win over No. 27-ranked University of Mary Washington and Saturday, they knocked off the host and No. 21-ranked Captains. But Sunday, in the middle of a stretch of playing six Top-30 teams, the Kenyon men faltered against the Cardinals.

From the start, things did not go Kenyon's way, as Wesleyan swept all three doubles matches to collect its first team point. The Owls' No. 1 doubles team of Paulo Pocasangre Kreling and Alejandro Gonzalez nearly picked up a victory, but Wesleyan's tandem of Harry Collomb and Max Litton held on for a 7-6 (8-6) win.

Both Pocasangre Kreling and Gonzalez bounced back in singles play, accounting for Kenyon's two team points. Pocasangre Kreling made quick work of J.T. Bilski in a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles. Then, at No. 2 singles, Gonzalez survived a marathon match with Collomb, pulling out a 7-6, 6-7, 10-3 victory.

The singles-match wins were Pocasangre Kreling's 12th in a row, and Gonzalez's ninth in a row.

Wesleyan took over from there and won the other four singles matches in straight sets. The team win improved the Cardinals to 5-2, while the loss dropped the Owls to 10-2.

The strength of schedule doesn't get any easier for Kenyon, as the team heads to Cleveland next weekend to face three more nationally-ranked opponents in Washington and Lee University, Washington University in St. Louis, and Hobart College.
