Owls fall to Big Red to open conference play

GRANVILLE, Ohio – After amassing a 7-8 record in the opening non-conference schedule, the Kenyon College baseball team kicked off its 2025 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) slate with a doubleheader against #5 Denison University on Saturday afternoon from Granville.

Although the Owls had several bright spots in both games, they could not keep up with the Big Red, falling 19-9 in game one and 13-3 in game two to fall to 7-10 on the season and 0-2 in conference action.

In game one, Denison opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, getting an early run off of Frank Lynch, who held the best ERA in the conference entering the contest (.41).

Kenyon charged back in the top of the third inning, as Trey Kent-Landrum's single set up Nate Rosen, who blasted a two-run home run to left field to claim the Owls first lead of the contest at 2-1, his first of the season. However, in the bottom of the same inning, the Big Red fired off four runs to reclaim the lead at 5-2.

Just as the Owls did in the third, they came back in the fourth with timely hitting. Edwin Groff led things off with a HBP, while Dustin Lee's single and Niko Price's walk left the bases loaded for Ben Resnick. The catcher capitalized on the opportunity with a grand slam to right field, his first homer of the season, to give Kenyon a 6-5 lead.

Lynch's day ended before the bottom of the fourth, dealing eight hits, four strikeouts, and five runs in three innings of work. The Big Red charged back again with a grand slam of their own in the fourth to regain the lead 9-6, and built an even bigger advantage in the fifth, making the lead 16-6.

The Owls added their third multi-run homer of the game to cut into the lead in the sixth inning, as Parker Gibbons and Resnick were driven in by Tyler Nee who ripped his second home run of the season to set the score 16-9. However, it was not enough to keep up with Denison in the end, who took game one 19-9.

Christian Harris got the nod in game two and was fairly solid against the #5 Big Red, adding four hits, two strikeouts and three walks in 3.2 innings of work. However, Denison was able to keep the Kenyon offense at bay in the second game, firing six scoreless innings and taking a 9-0 lead after six innings.

In the top of the seventh the Owls came alive again with another home run, the team's fourth of the day. Luke Meister bombed a three run shot to left field to score Nee and Resnick, who were both hit by pitches. For the day, all of Kenyon's 12 runs came by way of the long ball.

Mesiter's mash was the only offense that Kenyon could muster in the second game, while Denison added four more runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 13-3 lead and end the contest and the afternoon.

Resnick led the Owls offense on the day with two hits, two runs and four RBI, while Nee and Meister added three RBI each. Lynch had four strikeouts on the mound to lead all Kenyon pitchers, while Harris and Groff each added two.

Kenyon is back on the diamond on Tuesday, April 1 for a double header against Hiram College starting at 12:00 pm from Gambier.
