Owls close out game one, split DH with Comets

VERO BEACH, Fla. -- The Kenyon College baseball team made its way to the Jackie Robinson Baseball Complex on Monday, which set a stellar stage for a doubleheader between a pair of central Ohio teams. The Owls came out and won game one 3-2 by mixing strong pitching with timely offense, but the Capital University Comets claimed game two 15-3 to secure a split.

Kenyon's game-one win marked the team's first victory two days into the 2025 season. For the second day in a row, the Owls benefitted from a strong start by a senior pitcher. Lewis Cropper took the bump for Kenyon in game one, and the righty rifled off five strong innings. After giving up a run in the bottom of the first, Cropper settled in and controlled the game. Though Cropper only compiled two strikeouts, he relied on a sturdy defense and allowed just three hits. The pitcher only conceded one run and didn't issue any walks or hit any batters, and he earned the victory after Kenyon put together the win.

The Owls answered right after Capital scored, picking their pitcher up with a three-run second inning. Tyler Nee sparked the spurt, mashing his first career home run to tie the game. After the sophomore's leadoff homer, the Owls kept it rolling as the next two batters reached safely. A Ben Zimmerman bunt set the stage for leadoff hitter Nate Rosen, and the senior came through with a two-RBI knock that broke the tie and put Kenyon up 3-1.

Kenyon kept Capital off the board over the next four innings, but things got interesting in the bottom of the sixth after some small ball helped the Comets scratch a run across against Jackson Niedel. However, Ben Resnick gunned down a runner to get the Owls out of the inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, the game's final inning, Edwin Groff traded his bat for a glove and a ball as the DH took the mound. The senior struck out the first two batters he faced, and he stranded the tying run to earn his second career save.

Game two saw a lot more offense, and the teams went back and forth in the second inning. Capital landed the first blow with a four-run top of the inning, but Kenyon bounced back with two runs on one swing as Niko Price pounded a two-run round-tripper.

The big hit had Kenyon in the game, but Capital completely took over the rest of the way. The Comets added three runs in the fourth and five in the fifth to go up 12-2.

Senior Jonah Feinberg picked up his first career RBI with a single in the sixth, bringing Groff around for his second score of the game. Groff hit 3-for-7 over the twin bill, while Rosen went 3-for-6 with two walks over the two games.

Capital closed out game two with three more in the seventh, solidifying the split with a 15-3 win.

After a span of three games in about 26 hours, the Owls have an off day on Tuesday before getting back to action on Wednesday, March 5. Kenyon has a tough test on deck as the Owls take on Misericordia University, the defending NCAA Division III national champions who started the season ranked No. 4 in the nation. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Lawnwood Baseball Complex in Fort Pierce.
