Kenyon softball registers record-setting day

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The front end of Thursday's doubleheader turned out to be a record-setting game for the Kenyon College softball team. The Owls rang-up multiple new game-high program marks in a 31-3 win over the University of Valley Forge. Following that, the Owls rallied from five runs down in the second game of the day to defeat Cedar Crest College, 9-8, in walk-off fashion.

In that lopsided, five-inning, run-rule victory over Valley Forge, the Owls set single-game team program records for runs scored (31), hits (30), at-bats (44), RBI (29), triples (4), and total bases (43). In four innings of offense, Kenyon put up 13 runs in the first inning, eight in the second, nine in the third, and one in the fourth.

The Owls attack was led by junior Arianna Jalomo and first-year Kinsey White. Jalomo went 5-for-6 with four runs scored and four RBI. White turned in a 5-for-5 game with three runs scored and four RBI. Both of their five-hit outputs tied the Kenyon single-game record.

Junior Lindsay George added a 4-for-4 game with four runs scored and two RBI. Allison McCutchen, Leah Kuban, and Natalya Delsante all contributed three hit games, while Amanda Harris and Mara Thomas added two hits apiece.

Jalomo, Kuban, Thomas, and Madison Buckwalter all ripped triples, accounting for Kenyon's record-setting game total.

First-year Sadie Klyver was Kenyon's starting pitcher, but didn't pitch enough innings to record the win. She went two frames, didn't allow a hit or run, walked three, and struck out two. Junior Jillian Messinger took over the final three innings to collect the win. She yielded two earned runs, two hits, three walks, and she fanned four Valley Forge batters.

Game two took a different path, as Cedar Crest put together a seven-run fifth inning to take a 7-2 lead over the Owls. The Falcons roughed up Kenyon pitching for five hits and a couple of walks. They also utilized an error, a hit batter, and a wild pitch to build their five-run advantage.

Kenyon, however, did not panic. The Owls began their rally with a four-run sixth inning, closing within two runs. A pinch-hit RBI double from Kuban got things going. Brooke Avila, Keala Montgomery and Maeve McLaughlin added RBI in the frame, as the Owls headed toward the final inning.

In the top of the seventh, McCutchen entered the game in relief. She faced four batters, struck out one and kept the Cedar Crest lead at two.

In the bottom of the seventh, Buckwalter singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Delsante then singled to bring Buckwalter home. Harris was hit by a pitch and both she and Delsante moved up a bag on another wild pitch. Sophia Lynch then singled home the tying run and Avila singled home the winning run.

In all, Kenyon batters posted an astounding .603 batting average (47-of-78) throughout Thursday's two games. Jalomo was a combined 8-for-10 (.800) at the plate with five runs, five RBI, a double, and a triple.

The two wins bumped the Owls' record to 4-2 and they'll attempt to keep things going tomorrow, with a 9 a.m. make-up game against Brooklyn College.
