Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Owls erase early deficit to top Red Hawks

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – Playing in the first of three road games in New Jersey during the team's spring break road trip, the Kenyon College women's lacrosse team took on Montclair State on Thursday afternoon.

Despite trailing by four goals in the first frame, the Owls turned around a slow start and ripped off a 16-6 run throughout the rest of the game to take the winner on the road 18-12.

Montclair State (2-2) jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter, claiming a 3-0 advantage through five minutes of play. Mallory Brophy added the first goal of the day for Kenyon to break the drought, but the home team maintained its advantage early.

The Red Hawks scored four more goals in the first while the Owls scored three, as Lily Mason and Alex Tiatia twice found the net, with the second tally coming with one second left in the first to set the score at 4-7 after one.

Kenyon (2-2) dominated the second quarter and took control of the game in the next 15 minutes, ripping off a 7-to-2 run. Charlotte Skelly got the party started, followed by Spencer Kirsch and Mason to tie the game at seven with 12:35 to play in the half. Montclair State added a goal to retake the lead, but four straight from Ashley Quinn, Blythe Karras, Kirsch and Skelly lifted the Owls to a three-goal lead. The Red Hawks snuck one in before the half, but Kenyon took an 11-9 lead to the break.

Both defenses clamped down in the third quarter, proving to be the lowest-scoring period of the game. The Owls managed to keep a two-goal lead, matching two tallies from the Red Hawks as Ashley Auerbach and Skelly each found the cage to set the score 13-11 with 15 minutes to play.

In the fourth, Kenyon pulled away for good, outscoring the home team 5-1 in the quarter. The Owls scored three straight goals to open the period from Kirsch, Quinn, and Mason, and despite a goal from Montclair State to stop the run, Kenyon netted two more goals form Karras and Skelly to close the game on a massive run for the 18-12 victory.

Skelly tallied a career-high four goals while Kirsch and Mason each turned in hat tricks, while Karras cruised to a career-high seven points with two goals and five assists, another career best mark. Nola Garand had another strong start, making 12 saves and boasting a .500 save percentage on the other end.

The win snaps the Owls two-game skid and evens the team's record at 2-2. Next up, Kenyon will remain in the Garden State for a matchup with The College of New Jersey on Saturday, March 8 at 1:00 pm.
