Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Kenyon’s comeback falls short to Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Penn. – The Kenyon College men's lacrosse team continued its spring break trip through Pennsylvania on Saturday afternoon, taking No. 14 Swarthmore College in what marks the second matchup against a top-15 ranked opponent in as many games.

After facing a 10-1 deficit in the third quarter, the Owls stormed back to cut the lead to four. However, the comeback fell short in the end, as the Garnet scored eight goals in the fourth to take the game 19-9.

Both sides of the ball came to play for Kenyon (x-x) early on, registering 14 shots in the first quarter while Adam Hall recorded five saves. However, it didn't turn into points, as Swarthmore broke through first, scoring three straight goals in two minutes while making seven saves on the other end with 6:12 in the first.

Gavin Gumicio got the Owls on the board with his team-leading 14th goal of the season, and after 15 minutes the score was set at 3-1.

The Garnet came out in the second and ripped off a 5-0 run in the second quarter while not allowing any Owls offense to find the back of the net. Hall added another five saves in the second, but the lack of offense left the score 8-1 at the half.

After the break, Swarthmore added two goals to break open its biggest lead of the game at 10-1 with 11:22 in the third. However, this sparked a fire in Kenyon that resulted in five straight goals to get the visitors right back in the game.

Gumucio led off the scoring, followed by Tanner Lewis and Mike Kapral. David Chintala and Lucas Flynn each scored man-up goals assisted by Alex Haag, and the Owls found themselves only down 10-6 with 3:35 to play in the third. Lewis added another to end the quarter down 11-7.

Unfortunately for Kenyon, this is where its comeback was quelled. The Garnet scored four straight goals to open the fourth quarter to take a 15-7 advantage. Kapral and Gumucio each found the back of the net again in the final frame, but four more Swarthmore scores set the final at 19-9.

Lewis and Kapral joined Gumicio as multi-goal scorers to lead the offense, while the junior sat atop the stat sheet with three. Owen Breen caused a team-high two turnovers while Hall made 15 saves in net. On the faceoff dot, Thomas Nelson turned in an 8-for-25 day with five ground balls while Jack Levitt went 4-for-7.

Kenyon's final game in Pennsylvania will come on Saturday, May 15 at 1:00 pm against Grove City College.
