Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Owls hang around early, but Big Red pull away

GRANVILLE, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's lacrosse team held right with No. 21 Denison University through 30 minutes of Saturday's road North Coast Athletic Conference contest, battling through eleven ties or lead changes in the first half.

However, the Big Red pulled away in the second half to the tune of a 13-4 goal mismatch, eventually taking the game 20-11.

Denison opened the scoring with a goal in the game's first minute, but Kenyon answered with two quick goals six minutes later to take its first lead. Ashley Auerbach scored her 15th tally of the season to get the Owls on the board, followed by Spencer Kirsch less than a minute later.

Auerbach scored again in the first to put her team in front once again after the Big Red regained the advantage at 3:54, but one more goal from the home team set the score at 3-3 after one quarter.

The second quarter was the highest scoring for the Owls, but the Big Red were able to match each point with one of their own. Blythe Karras and Auerbach each found twine to open the quarter and build the team's biggest lead of the day at 11:51, taking a 5-3 lead.

Denison again answered to tie up the game at 5 at 8:29, but Bridgette Cassidy scored her fourth goal of the season for a woman-up score to put the Owls in front again. The home team scored twice to take the lead back with 43 seconds in the half, but Kirsch snuck one past the keeper with eleven seconds remaining to even the game at 7 after 30 minutes.

After halftime is where the scoreboard tilted towards Denison, as the Big Red commanded the third quarter with a 9-2 scoring advantage. Lily Mason scored for the Owls and Auerbach added her team-high fourth of the game, but after 45 minutes the Big Red took a 16-9 lead.

Ella Baxter and Karras each scored in the latter part of the fourth, but it was not enough to repair the damage, eventually setting the 20-11 final.

Auerbach led the team with four points on four goals, while Karras was not far behind with three points. Mason led the defensive effort with three caused turnovers, while Emma Sage grabbed four ground balls. Nola Garand stopped 13 shots in net.

Kenyon's record drops to 5-7 overall and 1-2 in the NCAC. The Owls are back on the field on Wednesday, April 16 at 5:00 pm, hosting The College of Wooster.
