Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Fourth-quarter surge lifts Wooster over Kenyon

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College women's lacrosse team got a pair of goals from three different players, overcame an early 6-1 deficit, and got the final quarter of Wednesday's game trailing by just one goal to The College of Wooster. The visiting Fighting Scots, however, halted all Kenyon momentum in that final frame and went on to claim a 14-8 decision.

Wooster (14-1, 4-0 NCAC) made the game look like it was going to be a blowout, as it raced out to an early 6-1 advantage. Sophia Mellis set the tone, scoring half the Fighting Scots' goals in that run.

Kenyon (5-8, 1-3 NCAC) didn't cave. First-year Ashley Auerbach snuck in a late first-quarter goal to get the Owls within four and then Kenyon put together a second quarter that ended with the teams knotted at 7-7.

During that second stanza, Mallory Brophy and Blythe Karras each netted two goals for the Owls. Brophy's second goal was scored in an extra-woman opportunity, while Karras' second found twine with just six seconds left and tied the game up.

Kenyon junior Spencer Kirsch, who had a goal in the first quarter, tacked on another in the third quarter to even the score, once again, at 8-8. Wooster's Lizzy Hardy, who also scored in the first quarter, matched Kirsch's tally and gave Wooster a 9-8 edge going into the final frame.

The Owls ran out of gas over those last 15 minutes, while Wooster whipped up five goals to break open what was a close contest. Brynne Snaguski scored two of the five for the Fighting Scots and ended the game with three goals, tying Mellis for the game-high mark.

Kenyon's Karras, Kirsch, and Brophy each scored twice. Auerbach had one goal, as did her classmate Charlotte Skelly. Defensively, Emma Sage and Cecily Torres both turned in solid games. Sage had two caused turnovers and three ground balls, while Torres totaled game-highs of four caused turnovers and six ground balls.

Behind that defensive duo, Kenyon goalkeeper Nola Garand faced 44 Wooster shots and made 17 saves, her second-highest output of the season.
