Tigers take two from Owls in NCAC twinbill

GAMBIER, Ohio -- In a make-up softball doubleheader held Wednesday afternoon, a DePauw University pitching duo controlled play and steered the visiting Tigers to 9-1 and 9-0 victories over the Kenyon College Owls.

In game one, Riley Depa flirted with a no-hitter until Kenyon broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning with both a hit and a run. Trailing 9-0, Kenyon's Keala Montgomery and Arianna Jalomo each got on base via DePauw errors. A groundout from Natalya Delsante moved both runners up a bag and a single to center field from Maeve McLaughlin scored Kenyon's lone run and thwarted the no-hit bid.

Depa pitched all six innings of the run-rule shortened game. She gave up just the one hit, she walked two and struck out two. Strikeouts aside, the rest of Kenyon's outs came on 12 groundouts and four flyouts.

Sophomore Kylie Hamm (4-6) pitched game one for Kenyon. She got into the sixth inning before giving way to junior Allison McCutchen. Hamm gave up seven runs, however, just three were earned, as the Owls defense committed five errors. She yielded seven hits, one walk, and fanned one DePauw batter.

In game two, it was DePauw pitcher Alex Romero-Salas who took over. She tossed all five innings, struck out two and scattered four hits among seven flyouts and six groundouts.

The Owls never really put together a threat until their final a-bat. They got a single from Jalomo in the first inning and a double from Brooke Avila in the third inning. In the bottom of the fifth, Lily Colvin led off with a double and later moved to third on a single from Amanda Harris. But both runners were stranded there, as the Owls' next two batters struck out and lined out, respectively.

First-year Izzy Akin (2-3) took the game-two pitching loss for the Owls. She covered three innings, gave up five runs, three of which were earned. She allowed four hits, walked two, and struck out one.

The results dropped Kenyon to 14-10 overall and 0-6 in North Coast Athletic Conference play. In the other dugout, DePauw improved to 16-10 overall and 8-0 in NCAC action.
