Owls close regular season at Carnegie Mellon

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The Kenyon College women's tennis team closed out its regular-season slate with a non-conference clash at Carnegie Mellon University. The dual marked a rematch between two teams that squared off earlier this season back on March 5. Carnegie Mellon claimed the first matchup, which was limited to singles results only, 4-2, and the Tartans repeated the result with a matching 4-2 win over the Owls on Saturday.

No. 22-ranked Kenyon finishes the regular season with a 13-6 overall record, while No. 8-ranked CMU improves to 20-2. Both teams figure to factor into the postseason equation, and after the teams matched up in the third round of the NCAA Division III Team Championship two years ago, a future, third meeting this calendar year could always be a possibility depending on the postseason, both conference championships and NCAA standings, shakes out.

The hosting Tartans took the dual's first point after winning two of the three doubles matches. Though they could not clinch the doubles point, Kenyon whipped up an impressive and decisive victory in the No. 1 doubles bout, where Eleni Lazaridou and Hana Nouaime won 6-1. The victory was the duo's fifth straight, and they improved to a 13-3 record this season. Despite the top-flight victory, CMU won 6-3 at No. 2 and 6-1 at No. 1 to take a 1-0 lead into singles play.

The top of Kenyon's lineup continued to shine in singles. Lazaridou looked dominant in a straight-set sweep against CMU's No. 1 competitor, winning 6-4, 6-4 in the top singles bout. The victory is Lazaridou's fifth straight singles win and eighth in her last nine matchups, and the junior improves to 12-2 this season.

Ana Brand brought the Owls another win and another point in the No. 2 matchup, where the sophomore secured a comeback victory. After falling 6-2 in the first set, Brand battled back with a 6-2 victory of her own and closed out the comeback with a 6-3 win in the deciding third set.

Though the dual remained up for grabs until the very end after Kenyon pushed CMU to a third set in two other singles matches, the Tartans pulled away with wins down the lineup to claim the victory. CMU compiled a pair of matching 6-1, 6-4 wins in the Nos. 3 and 4 matches, downing Shadia Amado Aguad at No. 3 and Nouaime at No. 4. The Tartans clinched the winning point at No. 6, where Lalasa Nagireddy fought hard but ultimately fell 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Clare Hudson's No. 5 match went unfinished in the third set.

With the regular season in the rearview mirror, the Owls will set their sights on the upcoming North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament. Kenyon earned the right to host and enter as the top-seeded team after claiming a third consecutive NCAC Championship, and this year's Owls will look to add to the program's winning ways as they are also after a third straight NCAC Tournament Championship.
