Kenyon sweeps Oberlin for first NCAC wins

OBERLIN, Ohio – Playing in its penultimate road series for the 2025 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) schedule, the Kenyon College softball team took on Oberlin College on Wednesday afternoon for a doubleheader.

The Owls commanded game one for an 8-0 win, and despite a late comeback in game two, hung on for a 9-5 win to secure a sweep and the team's first conference wins of the season.

Kylie Hamm got the nod in game one and fired one of her best games of the season. After giving up a dribbler to the mound on the first batter of the game, Hamm twirled six innings of nearly perfect work, giving up no hits and walking one with two strikeouts.

While Hamm handled the defensive side of the field, the Kenyon offense got off to a slow start in the opener, as both teams were held scoreless for three innings. However, the Owls broke through in the top of the fourth and never looked back.

Natalya Delsante ripped a double to center field to score Lily Colvin to get the visitors on the board. Delsante would advance on a steal and come home on an RBI groundout from Maeve McLaughlin, taking a 2-0 lead.

In the next inning, Morgan Gardner pinch ran and came around to score by way of a Colvin single. One batter later, Keala Montgomery got involved with an RBI single to score Madison Buckwalter. Delsante ripped home her second RBI of the night to score Montgomery, while Colvin reached home on a throwing error to give the Owls a 6-0 advantage.

One run apiece on a throwing error and a passed ball in the sixth and seventh innings cemented the shutout victory for Kenyon, its fifth of the season and the third for Hamm.

The Owls got off to a much faster start in game two, dropping four runs in the second inning to take firm control of the contest early. Leah Kuban got Kenyon on the board with a double to score Brooke Avila, and Buckwalter scored Lauren Klein on an RBI groundout. Montgomery hit a triple to close the inning with two runs for her team for a 4-0 lead.

On the other side of the field Jillian Messinger pitched a fabulous outing in the starting role, firing off four innings of work with five hits, two strikeouts, and one run to eventually earn the win.

Two innings later, Kenyon took a six run lead by way of RBIs from Montgomery and Emma Cashell. Oberlin scored back to back runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but the Owls got one back in the sixth to set the score at 7-2 by way of a Delsante RBI single.

In the seventh, Avila added perhaps the highlight of the day, lacing a liner down the right field line and circling all the bags for an inside the park home run. Buckwalter singled to score Gardner in the same inning to give the Owls a 9-2 lead. Despite three runs in the bottom of the inning from the Yeowomen, Kenyon hung on for a 9-5 winner and a sweep.

Montgomery led the team on the day with three hits, four runs, and four RBI. Delsante added three RBI for the doubleheader, while Avila contributed her second career home run.

Up next, the Owls will head to Delaware, Ohio for the final road series of the season against Ohio Wesleyan, with game one getting underway on April 26 at 1:00 pm.
