Cropper comes through in game two

OBERLIN, Ohio -- After suffering an 8-3 game-one loss to Oberlin College in Saturday's conference doubleheader, the Kenyon College baseball team got a boost from senior pitcher Lewis Cropper and got back on track with a 4-2 game-two win to even the season series with the Yeomen.

Cropper, who's pieced together an excellent season, wound up just two outs short of a complete game against Oberlin. In his eight-plus innings of work, he allowed just two earned runs on six hits and two walks. He struck out a season-high eight batters.

Saturday's numbers brought Cropper's season stats to a tidy 2.87 earned run average, a 4-1 record, and an impressive 0.96 WHIP, to go along with 24 strikeouts.

The Owls staked Cropper to a 2-0 lead before he even threw a pitch. In the top of the first inning, Nate Rosen and Tyler Nee both singled and moved up a base on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Luke Meister singled to right field, driving home both Kenyon runners.

In the third inning Parker Gibbons tripled and scored on an RBI groundout from Will Nelson. Then, in the fifth, Nee got on board with another single. Dustin Lee followed with another base knock and Nee came around to score when Meister hit into a fielder's choice.

Oberlin scored once in the fourth inning and then got a solo home run from Brady Groves in the bottom of the ninth. After that, Theo Canning relieved Cropper and recorded the game's final two outs to earn his first career save.

In game one, The Owls held a 1-0 lead into the sixth inning. The lone run came on a Gibbons' RBI single that scored Lee. In the bottom of the sixth, however, Oberlin roughed up Kenyon pitching for five runs. With two outs, the Yeomen used two walks, four singles, and a Kenyon error to take command of the game.

The Yeomen (12-21, 3-9 NCAC) tacked on three more runs in the next inning to take an 8-1 lead. Kenyon managed one more run in each of the final two innings, but never seriously threatened the Oberlin advantage down the stretch. The Owls' final two runs came on an RBI single from Meister in the eighth inning and a sacrifice fly from Rosen in the ninth.

Over the course of the twinbill, Nee was a combined 4-for-8 at the plate with a pair of runs scored. Gibbons, Meister, Rosen, and Robbie Coates all contributed two hits on the day. Meister plated four runs with his two hits, giving him 22 RBI on the season.

Kenyon (14-15, 7-7 NCAC) currently sits in fifth place in the NCAC standings and has two conference games left against The College of Wooster. Before the Owls face off with the Fighting Scots, they have a non-conference game on tap for Tuesday. That game will be played at Earlham College with the first pitch slated for 6 p.m.
