Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Owls’ season closes with win at Wittenberg

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- David Chintala scored six times Saturday and steered the Kenyon College men's lacrosse team to a convincing 22-8 victory over the host Tigers of Wittenberg University.

The result finalizes the Owls' overall record at 10-6 and the team's North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) record at 5-3. Within the conference standings, the Owls finished in a three-way tie for third place with The College of Wooster and Oberlin College. After a series of tiebreakers were applied, point differential in the games against Wooster and Oberlin left the Owls out of next week's four-team NCAC Tournament.

While that's not the ending Kenyon wanted, the 10-win season marks the Owls' fourth-straight year with a double-digit win total and the senior class will depart with the best four-year record (52-19) in program history.

On the field Saturday, Chintala's six goals improved his season-best team total to 41 and continued to build upon his Kenyon career record for goals, which now stands at 152. Additionally, Chintala is approaching the Kenyon career record for points. He ends his junior campaign with 194 career points, which puts him in a tie for fifth place all-time. Justin Martinich (1999-02) holds the program record with 238 career points.

After Wittenberg scored the first goal of the game, Kenyon retaliated with four straight. Chintala scored one of those four and then added another to push the Owls to a 5-2 lead after one quarter of play.

Things stayed even for the first part of the second quarter, with each team scoring three times. At the 7:34 mark, however, Gavin Gumucio scored for Kenyon and sparked a five-goal run that launched the Owls into halftime with a 13-5 advantage. Both Gumucio and Cameron Longway recorded a goal and an assist during the run.

Senior Thomas Nelson, who finished 15-of-28 on faceoffs for Kenyon, took the opening battle of the second half and scored within six seconds. His Saturday faceoff win total brought his collegiate total to 902, which is both a Kenyon and an NCAC record. He also added nine ground balls, bringing his Kenyon and NCAC career record to 617.

Wittenberg (5-9, 2-6 NCAC) got two goals in the third quarter, but never got closer than an eight-point margin the rest of the way. Between the third and fourth quarters, Kenyon rattled off seven straight to put things away.

Nelson, Longway, Carsten Viravec and Lucas Flynn all scored twice for Kenyon, which ended up with 13 different players recording at least one goal.

The Owls outshot the Tigers, 58-28, and starting goalkeeper Adam Hall made seven saves in 45 minutes of work.
