Kenyon seniors celebrate prior to split with Hiram

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- Kenyon College softball seniors Natalya Delsante, Amanda Harris, and Sophia Lynch were honored Sunday, before the Owls' neutral-site doubleheader against the Hiram College Terriers. Once on the field, the Kenyon crew put together two rallies, winning game one, 7-6, and losing game two, 4-2 in extra innings.

The conference games were both rescheduled and relocated due to the rainy weather throughout the weekend. Sunday afternoon at Denison University wound up being the landing spot for the split, which left Kenyon with a final record of 19-15, including a 4-10 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) mark. That win total is the Owls' best in three seasons under head coach Emily Miller.

Hiram (21-15, 9-5 NCAC) jumped out to early leads in both games. In the first contest, the Terriers racked up five runs in the second inning and another in the third to build a 6-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Owls started to time up Hiram starting pitcher Darian Kanno, who entered the game with a 13-3 record and a 0.90 earned run average. Following a walk and a single, Kenyon leadoff hitter Lily Colvin ripped a double that plated the Owls' first run. Later, with two outs, Delsante laced a single to left that scored two more runs and pulled Kenyon within three.

In the next inning, Emma Cashell and Lynch drew walks. A 15-minute rain delay followed, but when play resumed, Madison Buckwalter singled to score Cashell. When things flipped to the top of the batting order, Colvin came through again. This time she singled up the middle, bringing home both Lynch and Buckwalter, and tying the game up at 6-6.

Colvin, who was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI, ended up stealing second base and came around to score what would hold up as the winning run after Keala Montgomery doubled.

Junior pitcher Allison McCutchen came on in relief in the third inning for Kenyon, recorded eight outs, and didn't yield a run. She picked up the win to move to 5-0. First-year Izzy Akin got the last five outs, also held the Terriers scoreless, and gained her second save of the season.

In game two, Hiram jumped ahead with two runs in the top of the third inning. And, again, Kenyon answered to tie up the game. The Owls' first run was unearned. Brooke Avila reached second base on an Hiram error and came around to score on a Leah Kuban single. An inning later, Delsante singled to score Colvin, making the score 2-2.

Neither offense scored again until the 10th inning. Hiram got two off Kenyon pitcher Kylie Hamm, but the Owls offense did not have an answer this time. Hamm suffered the tough-luck loss, dropping her record to 5-9. She threw all 10 innings and struck out three.

In that second game, Kenyon had five hits. Avila had two of them.
