Led by Breard, Owls open season with a win

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Joshua Breard started out his final season of collegiate competition with a bang on Friday. The Kenyon College senior topped a field of 58 runners and guided the Owls cross country team to a victory in the Port Kenyon Opener.

Kenyon scored a total of 18 points, with all five scoring runners finishing within the top eight. Oberlin College placed second with 57 team points. Denison University was third with 59 points and Ohio Wesleyan University finished fourth with 104 points.

Breard cleared the 6k course with a winning time of 19:14.5, finishing about four seconds faster than sophomore teammate Charlie Blackmer, who took the runner-up spot in 19:18.1.

Colt Murphy, a senior, made it a Kenyon clean sweep of the top three spots, as he crossed the finish line in third place with a time of 19:25.2.

One of four Wittenberg University runners and a runner from Denison took the next two spots, but Dylan Sibbitt, also a senior, got Kenyon back on the board with a sixth-place showing by stopping the clock at 19:47.6.

The Owls' final scoring runner was first-year Adam Skidmore. He clocked in at 19:58.2 to take eighth place and notch seven team points.

About 20 seconds later, a pack of four Kenyon runners finished off their races. That quartet was led by sophomore Charlie Menzel, who finished 15th place in 20:21.5. Sophomore Caleb Low was 16th in 21:21.7, first-year Champ Blose took 17th place in 20:22.5, and senior Owen Rodstrom rounded out that group with an 18th-place finish and a time of 20:30.

The Owls now have a significant amount of time away from competition. They'll return to race action on Friday, September 19 for the annual All-Ohio Intercollegiate Classic at Cedarville University.
