Blackmer leads Owls to strong showing at All-Ohio

CEDARVILLE, Ohio -- Led by sophomore Charlie Blackmer, the Kenyon College men's cross country team logged an eighth-place finish among 20 teams, from all NCAA and NAIA divisions, competing in Friday night's annual All-Ohio Classic, which was hosted by Cedarville University.

Blackmer posted a time of 25:16.6 on the 8k course. That not only placed him 14th among 383 runners, but also went in the books as the second-best 8k time among all runners in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC). Blackmer's personal record time, which smashed his previous best of 26:33.8, was topped Friday by only one other NCAC runner, Sam Su, of John Carroll University. Su clocked in at 25:10.0 to take 11th place.

Supporting Blackmer's finish, senior Colt Murphy was next to cross the line for the Kenyon Owls, placing 25th. Like Blackmer, he posted a personal-best time of 25:35.9, which is now the fourth fastest time among all NCAC runners this season. Murphy's previous best on an 8k course was 26:44.3.

The next two Kenyon runners to complete the course were senior Joshua Breard, in 44th place, and sophomore Charlie Menzel, in 88th place. Breard got to the line in 25:50.2 and Menzel finished in 26:39.1.

Kenyon's final scoring runner was sophomore Caleb Low. He was just four seconds behind Menzel and stopped the clock at 26:43.8 in his first-ever collegiate 8k race.

Overall, the Owls posted a team score of 219 points, finishing just 10 points shy of the seventh-place Golden Flashes from Kent State University, an NCAA Division I institution.

Host Cedarville won the event with 65 team points, Ashland University was second with 75 points and Malone University was third with 115 points.

Among just NCAA Division III competition, Kenyon placed third and among just NCAC teams, Kenyon was second.
