Owls and Bulldogs battle to draw at Mavec

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College and Adrian College women's soccer teams battled for 90 minutes Thursday at Mavec Field, but neither team could break through with a game-winner, so the squads settled on a scoreless non-conference draw.

For Kenyon, now 6-1-2, the shutout was the team's eighth in nine games. The Owls defense allowed just four Adrian shots and just half of those were on target. As a unit, Kenyon's defense has held its first nine opponents to a combined average of 3.3 shots per game and just 0.11 goals per game.

Heading into this game, the Kenyon defense ranked No. 12 in goals against average among all teams in NCAA Division III.

Kenyon goalkeeper Ariel Kite benefitted from the strong play in front of her and recorded her fifth shutout of the season. Kite, who made one save in each half Thursday, now sports a 0.13 goals against average.

The Kenyon offense did manage to post a 16-4 advantage in overall shots, but, like the Bulldogs, the Owls didn't find many quality shots. Seven of Kenyon's shots were on goal and all were turned aside by Adrian goalkeeper Katelyn Stanton.

The first half of play saw a total of just six shots between the two teams, as the majority of the game was played in the middle third.

In the second half, a slow rain came down, but that didn't stop Kenyon from opening up its attack. Within the first 20 minutes of the frame, the Owls fired off six shots and gained four corners. The pressure, however, was thwarted by the Bulldog defense.

Perhaps the best chance of the game occurred with nine minutes remaining. Adrian got the ball deep into the Kenyon box and when a Kenyon defender slipped on the wet turf, Kite sprinted after the loose ball. The Bulldogs got to the ball first and pushed it out to Zoe Greenbaum, who fired a shot from just outside the box. Kite, who was sprinting back to get in position, made it back just in time to dive and punch the ball over the crossbar.

After that, Adrian (3-5-1) did not threaten again. Kenyon did manage a few hurried shots in the final minutes, but to no avail.

The Owls have just one more non-conference contest on their schedule and that will be Sunday at Otterbein University.
