Kenyon wipes out Wooster in straight sets

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Keeping its record clean in conference contests midway through the season, the Kenyon College volleyball team attacked a season-high rate of .261 and quickly put away The College of Wooster Fighting Scots, 25-23, 25-18, 25-17, Saturday afternoon at Tomsich Arena.

The Owls (2-13, 1-0 NCAC) chalked up 42 kills throughout the three sets, with sophomore Mariyah Rumpca-Veronese leading the way. She threw down 16 kills in 39 attempts and had just two errors, which resulted in a personal season-best attack percentage of .359.

Kenyon junior Olivia Gumz had nine kills to go along with a .412 attack percentage, while senior Juliette Tomamichel and junior Sophia Menke each added five kills to the Kenyon team total.

Setting things up for the Kenyon offense was junior Hannah Schwemm, who posted team-highs of 16 digs and 26 assists. Senior libero Lauren Blakemore had 15 digs and junior defensive specialist Arianna Flota tacked on 14.

The match could not have gotten off to a better start for the host Owls, who rattled off the first seven points of the first set. Wooster would slowly claw back into things, getting within one point at 11-10, and later going on a 5-1 run that knotted the score at 22-22. Kenyon, however, benefitted from a Fighting Scots service error and then closed out the set with a pair of kills from Rumpca-Veronese.

The second set was played a little closer at the start with neither team pulling ahead by more than two. Kenyon then had a quick three-point spurt that made the score 11-7. Another three-point run a few minutes later gave the Owls a 16-10 lead. Wooster, which never got closer than four points the rest of the way, struggled to contain its attack errors over the last dozen points of the set.

The third set started out even closer than the second. The teams knotted up the score seven times and, again, neither one got ahead by more than two. At 7-7, Kenyon posted kills from Gumz and Rumpca-Veronese. A Wooster error followed and the Owls moved in front 10-7.

Wooster worked back to within one point, at 13-12, but the Owls answered with a 9-3 run that put the set and the match away. During that run, Kenyon got a pair of kills from Menke and three more from Rumpca-Veronese.

Wooster (3-11, 0-1 NCAC) had a team total of 31 kills and attacked at a rate of .158 throughout the match. The Fighting Scots were led by Izzy Cozzie, who had nine kills.

Kenyon, which has played just three home matches to date, gets another home match on Wednesday. The Owls will take on Wilmington College in a  non-conference contest at 7 p.m..
