Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Blue Jays squeak by Owls with late goal

GAMBIER, Ohio -- In a battle of national powerhouse men's soccer teams, the No. 18-ranked Johns Hopkins University Blue Jays benefited from a late infraction and edged host and No. 13-ranked Kenyon College, 1-0, Friday evening at Mavec Field.

The loss was the first of the season for Kenyon (1-1-1), which had the better of possession in the first half. In fact, one of Kenyon's best chances came on its first shot of the game. Just five minutes from the start, Hayato Ishii unleashed a shot from the right side, but Johns Hopkins goalkeeper, John Ghanem, was in position to make the save.

The rest of the first half witnessed just two more shots. Both of them were from Kenyon and both were off target.

In the second half, the Blue Jays (2-1-0) took control of possession early, but never really created a scoring threat. About eight minutes into the period, they did record back-to-back shots, but one was blocked by a Kenyon defender and the other deflected off a Kenyon defender, making an easy save for Owls goalkeeper Dominic Pratt.

Kenyon countered with a couple of shots, but Ghanem was in place to thwart the threat.

It wasn't until the game's 73rd minute that the draw was broken.

With John Hopkins applying some pressure, a Kenyon defender managed to get control of the ball, but tapped it with his foot back to Pratt, who picked it up with his hands. The officials immediately called an intentional back pass and awarded the Blue Jays with an indirect kick inside the Kenyon box.

With 16:41 left on the clock, Johns Hopkins' Giulian Laudisa used the indirect kick to tap the ball quickly over to Sean Vaghedi, who then blasted his shot into the top right corner of the Owls' net for the game's only goal. The tally was also Vaghedi's first of the season.

Sensing urgency, Kenyon uncorked six shots in the game's final 10 minutes. The first three of those six missed their mark and the last three were saved by Ghanem, who concluded the contest with eight saves to log the shutout.

The Owls out-shot the Blue Jays 14-4 throughout the game, but it was Johns Hopkins that avenged its 2-1 loss on home turf against Kenyon one season ago.

The Owls will remain at home on Sunday and will entertain No. 21-ranked Franklin and Marshall College at 1 p.m.
