Owls fall in straight sets to Bishops

Delaware, OH – The Kenyon College volleyball team (7-14, 0-3) faced off Tuesday night with the Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan (10-7, 3-0) at Branch Rickey Arena. After hard-fought second and third sets, the Owls dropped a 3-0 conference loss to the Bishops.

The Bishops pulled away early in the first set, putting the pressure on the Owls' offense. Three kills from senior Olivia Gumz and two more from senior Sophia Menke gave the Owls a chance mid-set to gain control, however a straight six point advantage gave Ohio Wesleyan an edge to seal up the 25-10 win.

Looking reenergized in the second set, Kenyon fought hard to pull away with a win. Despite the Bishops leading by five points early on, first-year Abby Stenger put up a strong kill, assisted by senior setter Hannah Schwemm, to build some offensive momentum. Sophomore Christiana Paul contributed two kills and assisted a huge block to bring the score within four points after a seven point score differential. Even though Menke and Gumz each added a kill for the Owls and the Bishops gave up several attack error points, Ohio Wesleyan was still able to take set two, 25-20.

Kenyon, now 0-2 on the night, pulled out to a lead during the third set of the match. Gumz added an early kill alongside Schwemm with a setter-dump. Stenger had her fourth kill of the match, and Paul added another Owl kill for the stats line late in the set. Unfortunately, Ohio Wesleyan's strong front line performance, particularly the team's blocking ability, led to three straight-set wins, with the third being a 25-17 decision.

Gumz led the Owls offensively with six kills, while Menke followed with five. Both Paul and Stenger dealt four of their own, and Schwemm added two kills and 17 assists. The Owls totaled 20 kills and 41 digs, but were held back by a strong performance from the Bishops, who had 18 block assists, 2 solo blocks, and 9 service aces.

Kenyon will be back on the road this coming Saturday, October 16 as the team takes on non-conference opponent Muskingum University for a 7:00 p.m. serve time.
