Owls not able to break free from Bears

GAMBIER, OH — In their first game against the No. 9-ranked Washington University in St. Louis Bears since 2012, the Kenyon College Owls were unable to find their footing on either side of the ball, falling 65-0 in an offensive rout by the Bears, who remained unbeaten and atop the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) football standings.

After converting a first down on their first possession of the game off of seven rushing yards from first-year running back Charlie Runco and a nice completion by quarterback Drew Morgan to wide receiver Brendan Comerford, the Owls were unable to gain further yardage and punted the ball away.

What followed was an impressive scoring display from WashU (6-0, 5-0 NCAC). The Bears scored a touchdown on their first drive, which ended on a seven-yard run from quarterback Levi Moore. They then blocked a Kenyon punt, resulting in a safety, and, on their next offensive possession, logged another touchdown to move ahead 16-0 about nine minutes into the game.

Brayden Lewis then scored the Bears' next two touchdowns. The first of those two was on a 15-yard run in the first quarter and the second, which was set up by a fumbled Kenyon punt attempt, was on a seven-yard run in the second quarter. At that point, WashU held a 30-0 lead.

Two more WashU possessions in the second quarter resulted in two more touchdowns and a 44-0 advantage. While Kenyon struggled to stop the Bears, senior Michael Kerr had an impressive sack that halted the Bears' final drive of the half.

A quarterback change in the second half on both sides did little to quell the Bears' offensive momentum. They managed to score three more touchdowns in the third quarter, one of which came on a short pass from Alexander Singh to Avery Lazard. Lazard, however, turned the short pass into a 65-yard touchdown after breaking free of an initial would-be tackler.

That touchdown marked the end of all scoring, as both offenses were blanked in the final frame.

WashU chalked up 456 yards of offense, while its defense held Kenyon to just five first downs and 67 yards of offense. The bulk of that total was churned up on the ground by Runco, who produced 41 yards on 10 carries. Morgan was 6-of-16 for 21 yards and was constantly pressured, even though the Bears were only able to record one sack. Both Brendan Comerford and Tyler Gladden had three catches for the Owls (2-4, 1-4 NCAC).

Defensively, Andrew Pohlman led Kenyon with eight tackles. Kerr, Jackson Belyn and Sam Finnerty had four.

The Owls will hope to bounce back next Saturday as they resume conference play on the road against Denison University.
