Owls find success on senior day

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's soccer team (7-1-5, 3-0-1) celebrated its senior class and remained undefeated in conference after the 2-0 win this afternoon against the Tigers of Wittenberg University (4-8-1, 1-3-0).

Wittenberg, selected fifth in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) preseason poll, came to Mavec Field desperate for some offensive momentum after a two-game conference losing streak. The Tigers proved from kick-off that they were not backing down to the physicality of the Owls.

During the first half, Wittenberg looked strong in possession as they swung the ball through the midfield several times. Despite their tactical ability, Wittenberg was unable to get many offensive chances against the Owls backline, led by Skylar Helms, Georgia Yatrakis, Hannah Schmidt, and Fiona Dougherty.

Offensively, the Owls dominated the first half, outshooting the Tigers, 12-3. Sophomore midfielder Addison Szollosi had some good chances from outside the 18-yard box. In addition to Szollosi's attacking contributions, both Maia Pasco and Mia Voutsinas added to the stat sheet by forcing Tiger goalkeeper, Lily Winkle, to come off her line.

It wasn't until the 53rd minute of the game that the Owls saw some scoring action. Szollosi made a beautiful cross into the 18-yard box for Pasco to put the ball into the back of the net, putting the Owls up, 1-0. Pasco, coming off a hat trick from last game against Oberlin College, scored her fifth goal of the season.

After some more back-and-forth possession, Emily Copeland went down in the box and was awarded a penalty kick. Copeland stepped up to take the PK and scored a calm and composed goal, marking her fifth of the season, also.

The Owls ended the game outshooting Wittenberg, 26-8. Lila Michael made two saves for Kenyon to finish out the ninth shutout of the season.

After today's performance, Kenyon remains tied for first-place in the NCAC standings to Wooster College, a perfect way to celebrate the contributions, both on the field, in the classroom, and out in the community, of the women's soccer senior class (Skylar Helms, Ariel Kite, and Sadie Krueger).

"Thank you to our seniors and their families for making a lasting positive impact on the soccer program," said head coach, Sarah McClellen, "You have been fantastic representatives of Kenyon, great teammates, amazing role models, and exemplary student-athletes. We are so proud of you and look forward to seeing all you accomplish. Congratulations and best wishes for your future endeavors!"

The Owls will be on the road next game as they take on John Carroll University, Tuesday, October 20 at 7:05 p.m.
