Split squad finishes eighth at OWU Invite

POWELL, Ohio -- The Kenyon College men's cross country team had a split squad Friday, with some members of the team going to Lehigh University's The Paul Short Run and the rest of the team running in the Ohio Wesleyan University Invitational.

While The Paul Short Run was canceled due to heat, the Owls who ran closer to home combined for an eighth-place finish among 14 teams competing in Ohio Wesleyan's event, which was held at Liberty Park.

The five runners who collected points for Kenyon's team total of 239 were closely bunched, finishing within an 80-second span on the 8K course. The first of that bunch to cross the finish line was sophomore Adam Skidmore. He was in 22nd place after the first 2K, then 40th after 5K, and ended up finishing 44th with a time of 27:12.3 to gain 36 points for Kenyon.

About 12 seconds later, another Kenyon sophomore, Matthew Yerger, stopped the clock at 27:23.1 to place 55th with 41 team points. Two more members of the sophomore class were not far behind. John Schaal placed 71st and John Coffin placed 73rd in the field of 206 runners. Schaal cleared the course in 27:44.0 and Coffin was right on his heels, clocking in at 27:45.6.

The Owls final scoring runner was first-year Maxwell Wolf, who claimed 105th place with a time of 28:31.9 and that translated into 64 points toward the Kenyon team score.

Ohio Athletic Conference teams controlled the Invitational. Ohio Northern University won the event with a team score of 31 points. Otterbein University was second with 73 points and Heidelberg University was third with 95 points.

Kenyon ended up finishing right in the middle of the five teams competing from the North Coast Athletic Conference. Oberlin College and Wittenberg University finished ahead of Kenyon, while host Ohio Wesleyan and The College of Wooster finished behind the Owls in the final standings.
