Bilotto powers Kenyon offense in 6-2 victory

OBERLIN, OH — Coming off a hard-fought skirmish against Denison University, the No. 8-ranked Kenyon College men's soccer team returned to play on Saturday to face Oberlin College. Kenyon bounced back with a widely successful offensive onslaught, resulting in a 6-2 victory.

The six goals tied Kenyon's season-high output, matching previous 6-0 wins against Anderson University and Wittenberg University. More importantly, they led to a win that clinched a spot in the upcoming North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) four-team postseason tournament.

Kenyon opened the scoring immediately, with Jack Commandeur converting a goal on the first corner of the match at the three-minute mark. Joey Nigro was credited for the assist on the play.

After a few chances in which the Owls were unable to capitalize, they quickly added onto their lead, with two goals from Luca Bilotto and one from Ethan Castaneda. Nigro picked up another assist on one of the Bilotto goals, while Kevin Farina and Emmett Brown got the assists on the other two. By the end of the first half, Kenyon was up 4-0, leaving the Yeomen dazzled.

The Owls defense was quite impressive, too, in the first half. The unit allowed the Yeomen to create just one shot attempt compared to nine from the Kenyon offense.

In the second half of play, Oberlin was able to create some opportunities and slow the Owls' onslaught. While possession went back-and-forth to begin the second half, the Yeomen scored their first goal in the game's 54th minute on a strike from Bryce Van Duinen.

Kenyon backup goalkeeper Jack Giles made a nice save to thwart the next Oberlin attack, but a penalty kick in the 79th minute cut the Kenyon lead in half.

While Oberlin's offensive game plan was much more impressive in the second half, the increase in momentum was not enough to turn the tide as the Owls were able to tack on two more goals.

Bilotto completed his first collegiate hat trick, scoring off an assist from Danny Kankam in the 83rd minute. Bilotto now leads the team with 19 points and eight goals. Lucas de Alarcon, who also owns 19 points on the season, fired in his seventh goal of the season just 50 seconds after Bilotto's. Brown assisted on that goal, as well, giving him two helpers for the game and four for the season.

The Owls have just two regular-season games left and the first of those two will take place on Tuesday at Ohio Wesleyan University with a start time of 7 p.m.
