Owls can’t overcome Tigers on Senior Day

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College volleyball team celebrated its seven seniors Saturday before a home match with DePauw University. After the pregame celebration, all seven seniors made contributions on the court, but it wasn't enough for the Owls to overcome the Tigers, who put together a 25-18, 25-16, 25-13 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) win.

Kenyon's senior class members include Bryn Carrigan, Jordan Deane, Rachel Ferrara, Arianna Flota, Olivia Gumz, Sophia Menke, Naomi Polanski and Hannah Schwemm.

The vibes from the pregame celebration carried over to the court, as the Owls got off to a quick start, taking early leads of 6-3 and 10-7. Momentum, however, switched to the other side of the court when Julia McWaters came up to serve for DePauw. After a kill to gain the serve, DePauw rattled off five more points to move ahead 13-10.

Kills from four different players kept Kenyon right on the Tigers' heels. Then, with DePauw holding a 17-15 lead, things got away from Kenyon. The Tigers scored eight of the set's last 11 points to notch the opening win.

Set two unfolded in a similar fashion, as Kenyon took an early lead and DePauw responded with a five-point run. Following that run, the Tigers added a six-point swing to move ahead 22-11 on their way to taking a 2-0 advantage.

One final run in set three marked defeat for Kenyon. A three-point spurt pulled the Owls to within one point of the Tigers, at 11-10, but, with Lauren Bohn serving, DePauw went on a 13-0 run, which put them just one point shy of match point. Kenyon stalled the inevitable with three points, but a kill from DePauw's Addison Hooker closed things out.

Hooker and Madeline Ozersky each had eight kills for the Tigers, but it was Jen Proeh who led the way with 10. Overall, DePauw chalked up 43 kills and a .333 hitting percentage, compared to 23 kills and a .056 mark for Kenyon.

Ferrara paced the Owls with six kills, while both Gumz and Menke contributed five. Schwemm had team-bests of 16 assists and 12 digs.

The loss dropped Kenyon to 7-17 overall and 0-5 in NCAC play, while the win moved DePauw to 18-5 overall and 4-1 in conference contests.
