Kenyon’s lead wanes to Wabash after hot second half

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – The Kenyon College men's basketball team tipped off its final road contest of the 2025-26 regular season on Saturday afternoon, taking on Wabash College in a valuable North Coast Athletic Conference battle.

Although the Owls were able to hold a small lead consistently through the first half and into the second, the Little Giants got hot from the field, allowing the home team to capture the lead and never give it up, eventually winning 86-79.

Both teams shot the ball well in the first half, meaning that neither team could gain a big advantage either way. Kenyon hit 13-of-26 (50 percent) shots in the opening frame, while Wabash was not far behind at 47.8 percent (11-of-23).

Nicholas Graves and Marius Mazeika led the Owls through the five few minutes, giving their team an early lead thanks to back to back successful trips to the free throw line to take a 10-8 lead. Kenyon's biggest lead of the half came after Will McDonald splashed threes on consecutive possessions, leading to a 20-14 advantage with 10 minutes left in the first.

Kenyon would reach that six point advantage twice more in the half, as Mazeika hit a three pointer and two free throws to take a 28-22 lead at 7:20, and Graves laid in two baskets at 4:24 for a 32-26 lead. Thanks to some strong Little Giants shooting down the stretch, however, the visitors' lead would stand at just three points heading to the break, sitting at 39-36.

Wabash's hot shooting continued into the second half, as the team fired a 61.5 percent (16-of-26) mark from the field in the final 20 minutes. The Owls were able to weather the storm in the early goings of the half thanks to nice stretches from Graves and Charlie Heywood, whose role is increasing since his return in late January. The duo combined for seven of Kenyon's nine points in the first five minutes of the half, as the team led 49-44.

The Little Giants rattled off a 14-8 run in the next five minutes to take the team's first lead of the game at  58-57 with 10 minutes to play. From this point on the Owls just couldn't keep up with the impressive shooting percentage of Wabash, who ballooned its lead to 10 with 1:43 remaining by way of a 20-11 run. Although Kenyon was able to get within five in the final seconds, it just wasn't enough to handle the Little Giants, who secured the 79-86 defeat.

Graves ended the game with 26 points, just one shy of his career best. Mazeika and Heywood each added 13, with the latter being a season high for the returning big man to go along with a team and season high eleven rebounds. Nick Nelson also added an efficient afternoon, scoring nine points on 4-of-5 (80 percent) shooting.

The Owls will host their regular season finale on Wednesday, February 18 at 7:00 p.m. against Oberlin College.
