Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Scots slip past Owls in final seconds

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College men's basketball team led for over 34 minutes on Wednesday night's home North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) matchup against The College of Wooster, as the Owls looked to sweep the Scots for the first time in 15 years and pick up the team's fifth conference win of the season.

Kenyon held a five point lead and possession with less than a minute to play, but after a costly turnover and a Wooster layup on the other end, the team's lead quickly shrunk to 61-58 with 49 ticks on the clock. The Owls got the ball back and tried to bleed time, but yet another turnover and a layup set the score at 61-60 with just eight seconds remaining, forcing the visitors to foul and send the home team to the line.

A missed free throw and a defensive rebound later, Wooster charged down the court and drew a shooting foul of its own with one second remaining. Breckman Oakley stepped up to the line and sunk both shots to give his team the 62-61 win.

Back in the first half, the Owls couldn't have asked for a better start, taking a 12-0 lead to start the contest. Marius Mazeika led the team in the run with five points, while Langston Foster splashed a three for the opening bucket of the game.

In what would become a common theme for the game, Wooster didn't give up and came back with a run of its own, rattling off a 19-8 run thanks to two threes and 57.1 percent shooting from the field. With five minutes to play in the opening half, the Scots led 19-18, their last lead until one second remaining in regulation.

Kenyon responded to take the lead heading into halftime, as Foster scored four down the stretch and Jack Corrigan Conaty added a triple. After 20 minutes, the Owls led 27-23.

The Owls offense in the second half belonged to Will McDonald, who scored 18 points after the break with four three pointers. The first year tacked on two of those and a jumper in the first eight minutes of the half as Kenyon led 42-39.

McDonald added two more in the next seven minutes as the Owls tried to pull away. After Lucas Friedman sank three free throws, Kenyon's lead was 55-48 with five minutes to play.

The Scots quietly responded with an 8-4 run down the stretch to cut the lead to three points with 1:42 to play, as McDonald was the only Owl to score. Mazeika hit the layup with 1:18 remaining to set up Kenyon with the five point lead heading into the final minute.

McDonald's outing set career best marks in points (20) and field goals made (8), while also adding three steals on the other end to lead the team. Mazeika finished with 15 points, while Foster joined the duo in double figures with 10.

Kenyon falls to 10-11 on the season and 4-8 in the NCAC. Next up, the Owls will head to Northeast Ohio to take on John Carroll University on Saturday, February 7 at 3:00 p.m.
