Kenyon takes third in final regular season tournament

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The Kenyon College men's golf team competed in its final regular season tournament before the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Championship early this week, teeing it up in the Sam Snead Collegiate from Golden Horseshoe Golf Club.

The Owls battled through a tough test of golf to shoot a team score of +20 for the three round event, slotting them into third place out of 21 teams.

Connor Gray led Kenyon for the week at four under par, taking second overall on the 108-player leaderboard, marking the highest individual finish of his career. The sophomore opened play with a one-under 70, making three birdies and one bogey. He came back with two more birdies in round two, but four bogeys left his score at 73. He came back in round three with the lowest round of the tournament for any player, a five under 66. His round included two eagles and four birdies to smash the lowest round of his collegiate career, which previously was 69.

Tied for tenth on the individual leaderboard and second on the team with a +5 score was Adrian Jordan, who led off with a two-over 73 with three birdies. Two birdies and three bogeys kept him near the top with a 72 in round two, and he shot 73 with four birdies to close out the tournament.

After struggling with a 78 (+7) in the opening round, Jonathan Oakes came back to fire Kenyon's second best round of the tournament, a three-under 68. He made a team high six birdies during the round and was bogey free for the final 13 holes. Although his third round 78 was not what he had planned to follow round two with, he landed at T-36 on the leaderboard at +11.

Up next for the Owls was Jaiden Koonar, who slotted in at T-45 for the tournament at 12 over par. He holed a birdie and an eagle in round one, ending at 73 (+2), before making three more birdies in round two but making six bogeys and a double for a 75. He finished play with two birdies en route to a six over 77.

Rounding out Kenyon's starting five was Rafael Frias IV, who finished in a tie for 71st with a +18 score. He fired an 81 in the opening round before bouncing back in a big way, improving his second round score by five shots for a 76 that included two birdies. Improving in each round, he closed out on Tuesday with three birdies and a 74.

Oliver McGovern also joined the event as an independent, turning in a +13 card over three rounds to put him at T-52 overall. He scrapped together a 77 in round one and made one birdie in round two for a 78 that included two double bogeys. His highlight of the week came on the third hole of round three, where he made a hole in one from 201-yards out, the first of his college career. He would go on to make four birdies in the third round and shoot an even par 71.

Carnegie Mellon took home first place, finishing at +2 for the three rounds. Methodist University (+10) took second, while Babson (+25) and Lynchburg (+33) rounded out the top five.

For the tournament, Kenyon ranked tied for first in par five scoring (4.78) and fourth in total birdies made (39).

The first round of the North Coast Athletic Conference Championship will take place on Friday, May 1 from Avalon Golf and Country Club in Warren, Ohio.
