Kenyon men earn another fifth-place finish

PRATVILLE, Ala. -- Playing in another field loaded with nationally-ranked competition, the Kenyon College men's golf team, ranked at No. 12, claimed a tie for fifth place in the three-round Capitol City Classic, held at the RTJ Golf Trail at Capitol Hill on Monday and Tuesday.

The Owls put up team stroke counts of 298 and 293 in Monday's respective first and second rounds. A 294 in Tuesday's third round gave the Owls a three-day total of 885, putting them in a three-way tie for fifth place. That score also put Kenyon ahead of No. 2-ranked Washington and Lee University, as well as No. 7-ranked Emory University.

Huntingdon College, the host school and No. 1-ranked team in the country, won the Classic with a final team score of 861. Methodist University, ranked at No. 8, was second with an 866 and No. 4-ranked Carnegie Mellon University took third in the field of 18 teams, scoring 875.

It was the third consecutive fifth-place finish for the Owls, who have just one more tournament to play before the North Coast Athletic Conference Championship gets underway on May 1.

Individually, Kenyon's best finisher was junior Jonathan Oakes, who scored a three-round total of 217. That number was just one stroke over par and put him in a five-way tie for eighth place. He shot a four-over 76 in the first round, a two-under 70 in the second round, and a one-under 71 in the final round. Over those last two rounds, Oakes carded eight birdies and just five bogeys.

Like Oakes, Jaiden Koonar improved throughout the three rounds. The Kenyon junior fired rounds of 75, 73, and 73, for a total of 221 that put him in a tie for 24th place on the individual leaderboard. Koonar penciled in three birdies in both the second and third rounds.

One shot behind Koonar, at six-over, was sophomore Connor Gray, who started Monday with a 71 and then added a 75. On Tuesday, he posted a 76 to finish with a score of 222, which put him in a tie for 26th place within the field of 95 golfers.

The Owls' other scoring golfer was sophomore Adrian Jordan. He tied for 37th at nine-over. His rounds included a 76, 75, and a 74, for a final count of 225.

The Kenyon team's final regular-season tournament of the campaign will be played Monday and Tuesday and will be hosted by No. 13-ranked Piedmont University.
