Former AD Peter Smith named to CSCAA Division III Hall of Fame

GAMBIER, Ohio – Former Kenyon College athletics director Peter Smith has been selected for induction into the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Division III Hall of Fame, recognizing a career marked by sustained success and meaningful impact on collegiate athletics.
The CSCAA announced its 2026 Hall of Fame class, honoring 21 individuals who have made lasting contributions to NCAA Division III swimming and diving. Smith will be formally inducted May 4, 2026, during the association's annual awards celebration in Rosemont, Illinois.

Smith served as Kenyon's athletics director for 15 years, from August 2002 through December 2017, helping guide the Owls through a highly successful era. He also held leadership roles at Wesleyan College and previously coached at Emory University.

Before transitioning into administration, Smith built an impressive coaching résumé at Emory, where he led both the men's and women's swimming and diving programs for 13 years. During that span, the women's team captured six UAA championships, while the men finished as conference runners-up seven times. His teams produced 143 All-America performances and 13 individual national titles, and he was named CSCAA Women's Division III Coach of the Year in 1992. Smith's impact also extended to the classroom, with multiple student-athletes earning NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships.

During his time in Gambier, Kenyon's 22 varsity programs combined for 72 NCAA Division III postseason appearances, 18 national team championships, and 101 individual national titles. Additionally, 45 teams captured conference championships under his leadership.

Off the field, Smith emphasized academic achievement and student-athlete development. Kenyon student-athletes earned 37 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships and 55 Academic All-America honors through the College Sports Communicators, while consistently appearing on the North Coast Athletic Conference Academic Honor Roll.
Smith also oversaw the completion of the Kenyon Athletic Center and led multiple facility upgrades, while expanding staffing to support the department's continued growth. In his final years, Kenyon athletics recorded multiple top-five finishes in the NCAC's all-sports standings.

Smith retired from Kenyon in 2017 and later served with the U.S. Council for Athletes' Health. He was previously inducted into the Emory Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.
