No. 22 DePauw holds off Owls in defensive battle

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College defense stood up to No. 22-ranked DePauw University for quite some time during Saturday's conference football game at McBride Field. The visiting Tigers, however, broke free with 17 points in the fourth quarter en route to a 31-3 victory over the host Owls.

When the game started, it looked like the teams were primed for an offensive shootout. DePauw took its opening drive 73 yards over five plays and scored a touchdown just two-and-a-half minutes into the game. Kenyon then took over and used its first play from scrimmage to convert a short pass from Drew Morgan to Joey Tramontana, who slipped through the Tigers defense for a 52-yard gain. Four plays later, Tyler Bell converted a 40-yard field goal  for the Owls.

After that, the score didn't change much over the next 40 minutes of play, as both teams' defensive units dominated. In that span, only a second-quarter touchdown from DePauw was scored, giving the Tigers a 14-3 lead at the end of both the second and third quarters of play.

For Kenyon, Dominic Simpson, Trey Blazevich, and Andrew Cooney each logged six tackles apiece. One of Simpson's tackles went for a sack. Michael Kerr had four tackles, including a sack, and also racked up three quarterback hurries, forced and recovered a fumble, and had two pass break-ups. Jackson Belyn had three pass break-ups and Sam Finnerty put together a 19-yard interception return.

DePauw's defense was even more impressive, though, recording six quarterback sacks, forcing three Kenyon turnovers, and holding the Owls run game to -45 yards on 27 attempts. In all, DePauw held Kenyon to 86 yards of offense.

The Tigers got their offense turned around in the fourth quarter, scoring on its final three possessions of the game. Back-up quarterback Jack Kazmierczak threw touchdown passes to Gary Schmittel and Logan Shoffner, and in between those scores, Alex Gibbs booted a 22-yard field goal.

Kazmierczak ended up going 8-for-11 for 91 yards after taking over for starting quarterback Scott Ballentine, who was 15-of-29 for 179 yards. Back at the start of the game, Ballentine ran in the Tigers first touchdown from 15 yards out. In the second quarter, he connected with Carter Foran for a 24-yard passing touchdown.

Simpson, who played a solid defensive game for Kenyon, also racked up 151 yards on four kickoff returns and is now averaging 36.9 yards per return over four games. Additionally, on special teams, Alex Jurch was busy for the Owls, punting 10 times and averaging 35.5 yards per boot.

The loss dropped Kenyon to 1-3 overall and 0-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC). The win moved DePauw to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

Up next for the Owls is a trip to Springfield, Ohio to face the Wittenberg University Tigers, who fell to 0-4 overall and 0-3 in the NCAC after today's 49-3 loss to No. 6-ranked John Carroll University.
