Tyler Wood made his collegiate coaching debut in 2012 after a fine, four-year playing career at the University of Mount Union. A native of Hudson, Ohio, Wood was a mainstay for the very successful Explorers high school program prior to taking his talents to Mount Union, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sports management.
On the diamond, Wood played multiple positions, most notably catcher, while also serving as team captain. In 2011, he started and captained a Purple Raiders squad that qualified for the Ohio Athletic Conference’s postseason tournament, one that included eventual national champion Marietta College and nationally-ranked Heidelberg University.
Wood also honed his skills coaching and playing for the Hudson summer club in the ultra-competitive Northeast Ohio Roy Hobbs league. The Explorers were three-time region and state champions (2008-2010) and the coaches were honored in each season as the staff of the year.
In his tenth year around the Lords program, Wood is involved in the team’s recruiting efforts and works primarily with the catchers. He is also heavily involved with plotting offensive game plans. During the 2019 season, he aided the Lords' offense to a .452 slugging percentage, the fourth-best single-season total in program history. The team also produced 25 home runs, the second-best single-season mark.Â
Most recently, Wood has helped the Lords post winning records in three of the last five years. Three seasons ago, in 2018, he helped the team reach the NCAC Tournament for the first time since 2012. In his time in Gambier, he has coached 38 All-NCAC selections and seven All-Region selections.Â
