Brett McMurray enters his second season with the Kenyon in 2023 after earning a promotion to the defensive coordinator role. In his first season, the 2022 campaign, McMurray served as the Owls' defensive line coach and director of football operations.
McMurray came to Gambier after a short stint at Chabot College. Before Chabot, he spent just over a year at Sul Ross State in Alpine, Texas, and a year at the College of the Redwoods. At each stop, McMurray acted as the head defensive coordinator.
As a player, McMurray played for three years at Butte College, winning a national championship in 2008. Following the 2010 season, he played at Division II Humboldt State. McMurray returned to his alma mater in 2018 to be the co-defensive coordinator while also coaching the linebackers. Before that stop, he coached the linebackers and assisted with game-day operations at Southwest Minnesota State University beginning in January 2017. Before going to Minnesota, McMurray coached the tight ends and fullbacks at Bemidji State University.
McMurray got his coaching career started at the College of the Redwoods in 2015 as the linebackers coach. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies from Humboldt State and a Master of Science in Physical Education from Southwest Minnesota State.
