OBERLIN, Ohio – With a 15-12 triumph in the decisive fifth set Friday night, host Oberlin College dealt a blow to Kenyon College's hopes of returning to the North Coast Athletic Conference volleyball tournament for the first time since 2003. The 3-2 victory not only tied the Yeowomen with the Ladies for the final spot in the NCAC's postseason field but also gave them an important leg up with the head-to-head tie-breaker.
Following their ninth-straight defeat, Kenyon (3-16, 1-6 NCAC) now faces a must-win game when Denison University visits Tomsich Arena tomorrow at 4 p.m. If the Ladies manage to upset the Big Red (17-8, 4-3 NCAC) in their conference finale, they will also need the College of Wooster to knock off Oberlin (8-13, 1-6 NCAC) in order to wrap up an eighth-place finish in the standings.
Friday night's final set proved to be a wild affair. After knotting things up at two sets apiece via a dominant 25-10 decision in the fourth, momentum appeared to be on Kenyon's side. That shifted quickly, though, when the Yeowomen surged to the cusp of victory, 12-5. The Ladies charged hard and forced Oberlin to burn a timeout when they pulled within two, 14-12. Unfortunately, Kenyon's run ended immediately after the stoppage when the Yeowomen notched the match point.
The Ladies opened the night with a 25-18 win in the first set before dropping the second by an identical margin. The chance to regain command eluded Kenyon in the third frame, which went to the Yeowomen by a slim 25-20 margin.
