Owls fall to Gators, Spartans in Crossover play

TIFFIN, Ohio --The Kenyon College volleyball team stretched the Allegheny College Gators to five sets on Friday evening and then ran out of gas against Case Western Reserve University in the second match of the opening day of the Great Lakes Crossover, a nine-team event held at Heidelberg University.

The Owls were outlasted by Allegheny, 25-23, 22-25, 25-20, 23-25, 15-12, and then dismissed by Case Western Reserve 25-16, 25-10, 15-16. The results brought the Kenyon team's early-season record to 0-3 as it heads toward tomorrow's second and final day of the Crossover, one that will have the Owls go up against Adrian College and Baldwin Wallace University.

Seniors Olivia Gumz and Sophia Menke kept the Owls in the contest against the Gators. Gumz piled up 25 kills across the five sets, while Menke tallied 10 kills and six blocks.

Nearly every set went down to the wire. In the first, the two teams were tied at 22-22, but Allegheny benefited from a couple Kenyon mistakes to score three of the set's final four points. In the second set, the teams were tied at 21-21. Kenyon then got three straight kills from Gumz, who helped even up the match score.

The third set was the least closest. Allegheny went up by as many as five points multiple times and finalized the set at the same margin. In the fourth, the teams were tied twice late. Kenyon, however, evened things up again by scoring the final two points, which were, again, both kills from Gumz.

In the deciding fifth set, Kenyon moved ahead by three points on three different occasions, but Allegheny went on a 4-1 run to tie the game at 11-11. Another 4-1 run ensued, allowing the Gators to claim the win.

Against Case, it was first-year Abby Stenger, who led the attack for the Owls. She threw down a team-high nine kills while posting a hitting percentage of .381. Sophomore Kendall Kirkbride added seven kills, but the Kenyon team could not keep up with the Spartans, who only trailed Kenyon twice—once by a 1-0 count in the first set and the other time, by a 2-0 count in the third set.

As a team, Kenyon amassed 58 kills and a .270 hitting percentage against Allegheny, but could only muster 23 kills and a .110 percentage against Case Western Reserve.

Gumz did not play against Case, so she ended her day with 25 kills. Stenger totaled 13 kills across the two matches, while Menke had 12 and Kirkbride had 11. Senior Hannah Schwemm contributed 53 assists and 10 digs, while another senior, Arianna Flota had a team-best 15 digs, all coming in against Allegheny.
