BLUFFTON, Ohio – Bluffton University quarterback Tyler Wright threw for one touchdown and ran for another to lead the Beavers past the Kenyon College football team by a 20-0 final Saturday. The loss spoiled the Lords' season opener and the head coaching debut of
Chris Monfiletto.
Bluffton (1-0) was efficient in all facets of the game and limited Kenyon's opportunities by controlling the clock for more than 36 minutes. With that much possession time, the Beavers offense was able to chew up 422 total yards – 167 on the ground and 255 through the air.
Wright gave Bluffton a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter with a nine-yard touchdown run that capped a short scoring drive following a Kenyon turnover. The Beavers scored twice more early in the second quarter, highlighted by Wright's 43-yard touchdown pass to Calib Alexander, to build a 17-0 lead by halftime.
The Lords' defense rebounded and only allowed three more points over the final 40 minutes of the contest but the offense never got going. Bluffton held Kenyon to 145 total yards and six first downs in the shutout victory. Most of those yards came from senior running back
Brett Williams, who paced the Lords with 98 rushing yards on 24 carries.
Wright's final line for Bluffton included 255 yards on 24 completions. Running back Airic Steagall carried 15 times for 76 yards and hauled in four passes for 46 yards.
Kenyon's linebacking corps combined to produce 34 tackles, nine of which were for a loss. Junior
Kolin Sullivan led the way with 12 stops while
Reed Franklin and
Bradley Couts each had 11.
The Lords host Earlham College next Saturday at 1 p.m. in their first home game of 2012.
