Owls offense surges through power outage

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Despite a power outage on campus that lasted for more than half of Saturday's football game at McBride Field, the Kenyon College Owls were charged up while generating a 59-7 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) victory over the visiting Yeomen from Oberlin College.

The Owls' point total was a season-high, as was their rushing total (140). Additionally, the Kenyon team rang up 316 yards of total offense on just 48 plays, for an average of 6.6 yards per play.

Sophomore quarterback Drew Morgan was 13-of-15 for 130 yards and four passing touchdowns. Three of those touchdowns went to first-year receiver Max Heis, who finished the game with six catches for 54 yards. Tyler Gladden also had 54 receiving yards on just two catches, while first-year Jaden Jackson amassed a team-high 73 rushing yards on just five carries, including a 50-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Morgan and Heis took control of the game early, accounting for Kenyon's first three touchdowns. In the first quarter, the duo teamed up for touchdown tosses of eight and four yards, and, in the second quarter, they tacked on a 10-yard strike.

The second quarter also saw Nicholas Gobel, one of Kenyon's back-up quarterbacks, sneak in a touchdown from one-yard out and senior Nolan Dirks haul in his first career receiving touchdown, a two-yard toss from Morgan.

That flurry left the Owls with a convincing 35-0 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, Gobel ran in another Owls' score, this time from eight yards out. He finished his day with 10 rushing yards, two TDs, and 69 passing yards, while completing all four of his pass attempts.

Still pitching a shutout deep into the third quarter, the Kenyon defense decided to get in on the action. A strip sack from junior Alex Knight was scooped up by classmate Trey Blazevich and run into the end zone for a 49-0 Kenyon advantage.

Jackson started the fourth quarter with his 50-yard touchdown run and Bronson Maccini booted a 29-yard field goal to put a cap on the Kenyon scoring.

It wasn't until there was just 2:33 left on the clock that Oberlin avoided the shutout. Following Maccini's field goal, the Yeomen went on a nine-play, 75-yard drive that concluded with Ben Suler throwing a 29-yard touchdown to Jason Nicolas.

The 169 yards of total offense from Oberlin were the fewest allowed by the Kenyon defense this season. Senior Michael Kerr led the defense with six tackles, including a strip sack in the second quarter that led to the Dirks' touchdown. Andrew Cooney had five tackles and Knight, who had three tackles, ended up with two sacks.

Kenyon (3-5, 2-5 NCAC) has just two games left on its schedule. The next one being at Wabash College (4-4, 3-4 NCAC) next Saturday with a 1 p.m. kickoff.
