GRANVILLE, Ohio –
Brandon January put together another solid ground game and
Blake Calcei scored one more touchdown Saturday, but outside of those accomplishments the Kenyon College football team could not get its offense going in a season-ending 42-7 loss at Denison University.
January, a junior who rattled off 112 rushing yards against The College of Wooster last week, put up another 77 rushing yards on 20 carries against Denison. January finished off the season with a total of 699 rushing yards and four touchdowns. He posted those numbers on 134 carries, which gave him an impressive average of 5.3 yards per carry for the season.
Calcei , a sophomore, only ran the ball three times for four yards against the Big Red, but one of his carries was for a one-yard touchdown in the second quarter. That gave Calcei team-highs of ten touchdowns and 62 points on the season. He had four touchdowns through the air and six by way of the ground.
Calcei's touchdown capped off a long, 16-play, 69-yard drive for the Lords, who ended the season with an overall record of 4-6 and a North Coast Athletic Conference mark of 4-5.
As a team, Kenyon managed just 117 rushing yards and 69 passing yards on the day. While the Lords posted 186 yards of total offense, Denison cranked out 475 yards of offense against a Kenyon defense that had been steady throughout the year. The Big Red scored on their first two drives of the game and later capitalized with touchdowns on two of three Kenyon turnovers.
Kenyon's second-quarter touchdown got the Lords back in the game at 14-7, but Denison tacked on one more score to go into the break with a 21-7 advantage. When the second half opened, the Big Red again scored on each of their first two possessions and put things out of reach. Quarterback Brandon Sklenar threw for 221 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed for 75 yards and was only out-gained on the turf by running back Colin Morris, who racked up 90 rushing yards and a pair of touchdowns. More than half of Sklenar's passing yardage ended up in the hands of DuShawn Brown, who caught six balls for 114 yards.
The result was not typical of a Lords defense that was ranked highly within the conference. Senior defensive back
Zach Morrow led the team with 11 tackles against Denison and ranked second among teammates with 87 tackles on the season. Senior linebacker
Reed Franklin had 10 tackles against the Big Red and finished atop the Lords' season chart with 93. Additionally, senior linebackers
Kolin Sullivan and
Brad Couts contributed eight tackles apiece Saturday. Sullivan capped off his career with a Kenyon single-season record of 26 tackles-for-losses. He also holds the Kenyon career mark with 70 tackles-for-losses.
