Scots turn turnovers into win over Owls

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Saturday's rain-soaked football game at McBride Field, marred by too many turnovers, ended up going the way of The College of Wooster Fighting Scots, who capitalized on a late interception to post a 26-19 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) victory over the host Kenyon College Owls.

Tied at 19-19 with less than nine minutes left in the game, Kenyon and Wooster traded possessions without threatening to score. The Owls punted three times. Wooster threw an interception and punted twice. That left the ball in the hands of the Owls again, but with only 38 seconds showing on the clock.

Set up on their own nine-yard line, Kenyon looked to pass on first down. Quarterback Drew Morgan, however, was forced from the pocket and threw on the run. The ball was picked off by Wooster's Brody Snyder at the Kenyon 29.

One play later, Wooster quarterback Damon Hooks connected with Logan Hupp on a 29-yard touchdown to the left side of the end zone with only 20 seconds remaining on the clock. The point-after kick gave the Fighting Scots a seven-point lead and, eventually, the win.

Kenyon finished off the game with two short gains and another interception, its sixth of the contest. The Owls also fumbled the ball away twice, handing the pigskin to Wooster a total of eight times. All 26 points scored by the Fighting Scots came off Kenyon turnovers.

Wooster, by no means, played a clean game either. The Fighting Scots threw a pair of interceptions and lost one fumble. The Owls, though, managed just three points off those turnovers.

Early on, Wooster booted a pair of field goals, one of which was answered by Kenyon. Then, with just three seconds left before the half, Morgan launched a 33-yard touchdown strike to Hunter Fike for a 10-3 Owls' advantage.

Wooster used its first possession of the second half to score a touchdown and moved ahead 12-10, but when the Fighting Scots tried the extra-point, Kenyon's Dominic Simpson blocked it, scooped it up, and went the distance to tack on two points and knot the game at 12-12.

Using that momentum, Morgan and the Owls marched down the field on their next possession. During the drive, Morgan threw two nice passes to Max Heis, one for 41 yards, and the other for a 19-yard touchdown and a 19-12 Kenyon lead.

Wooster then tied the game back up with an eight-yard touchdown run from Mason Delmarle with 8:51 showing on the fourth quarter clock.

Overall, Wooster (1-1, 1-0 NCAC) had just 191 yards of total offense, while Kenyon (1-1, 0-1 NCAC) had 369, with 279 coming through the air. Neither team established the run, with Wooster gaining 81 yards on the ground and Kenyon tallying 90.

Individually, Heis had the best game for Kenyon, hauling in five catches for 117 yards and the third-quarter touchdown. For Wooster, defensive back Anthony Sines captured the spotlight with three interceptions.

The road ahead does not get any easier for Kenyon, which will travel to Cleveland next weekend for a game with John Carroll University, a 2025 NCAA Championship semifinalist and a team currently ranked No. 9 nationally.
