WESTERVILLE, Ohio –
Sierra DeLeon served as the bright spot for Ladies Volleyball in Saturday's doubleheader defeat, posting a combined 17 kills on day two of the Otterbein/Capital Tournament. Kenyon dropped to 0-4 to begin the season after enduring a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Albion College and a 3-1 loss to Defiance College. The Ladies wrap up their first tournament of the season before engaging in another set at an invitational at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology next Saturday.
After dropping their first match against Albion in straight sets, the Ladies' play improved when they played the Defiance Yellow Jackets tight through three of four games. Both teams swapped 25-23 scores in the first two sets, taking a tied match into the third. Defiance broke away with a 25-19 third-set win and put the match away by rolling to a 25-14 victory in the fourth.
Sierra DeLeon cemented her place on the all-tournament team with 15 kills in Kenyon's match against Defiance, hitting at a .538 success rate.
Ana Maricic joined her in double-digit kills by posting 13 of her own and hitting well with a .455 attack percentage. Combined, DeLeon and Maricic committed only four errors. Maricic also led the team in blocks, contributing 5.5 total, five of which of the solo variety.
Hannah Shank set the two of them up and posted 32 assists.
In the first match of the day, Albion ran away with the first two games by counts of 25-15 and 25-12. The Ladies posted a challenge in the third set, but the Britons pulled out the victory despite needing 26 points to get the job done.
Amber Kraus led Kenyon in that match with five kills. Albion held Kenyon without a block while putting up 10.5 team blocks on the other side of the net, and was led by Jalyn Ingalls' eight kills.
With her 29 total kills over the weekend, which led the team offensively, DeLeon was one of eight players named to the All-Tournament Team. Over her four matches played, the senior went 29-for-69 on the attack with 12 errors and hit at a .246 clip. DeLeon also had four digs and three solo blocks.
Other notable performances over the weekend included Maricic who posted 26 kills and had a .340 attack percentage.
McKenzie Mitchell had 73 digs to lead the Ladies and Shank had 78 assists to add to her six kills and 33 digs.
