Ladies drop pair in first day of tournament

WESTERVILLE, Ohio  – Kenyon Ladies Volleyball dropped two matches on its opening day of the season. The Ladies lost 3-1 to Trine University in the team's first match of the Otterbein/Capital Tournament before falling to the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in straight sets in the nightcap. Sierra DeLeon led the team with 12 kills between two matches while Hannah Shank combined for 30 assists and 16 digs.

Ana Maricic jumped out of the gate with nine kills on 15 attempts, good for a .400 hit percentage in Kenyon's opening match against Trine (1-0). After the Thunder pulled out one game to none, the Ladies rebounded by edging out Trine in the second, 25-23. Paced by a pair of hitters with double-digit kill counts, the Thunder pulled away in the third and fourth sets to complete their victory. Trine's Taylor Rabel led all scorers with 17 kills and achieved a double-double with her 13 digs. Teammate Lauren Verkamp had 16 kills on 37 attempts and likewise attained a double-double with 14 digs.

DeLeon posted eight of her 12 total kills in the opening match, while also putting up a pair of solo blocks. McKenzie Mitchell led the defense with 20 digs. Hannah Shank helped direct the offense with 18 assists and chipped in 10 digs.

In their late evening match, the Fightin' Engineers made short work of the Ladies with a three-set win, 25-10, 25-15, 25-14. Rose-Hulman (1-1) controlled the nets by collecting 5.0 team blocks and hit at a high percentage (.365) to deliver Kenyon its second loss of the night. Mary Jo Scott led the Ladies with five kills while DeLeon turned in her third solo block of the day, the team's lone knockdown at the net.

Sarah Jensen led the Engineers with 12 kills on 19 attempts, good for a .579 hit percentage.

Kenyon (0-2) jumps back into action for day two of the tournament at the Rike Center, beginning with Albion College at 9:30 a.m. They will close out the weekend against Defiance College at 12 p.m.
