RICHMOND, Ind. – In a tale of two teams from week one to week two, the Kenyon College Lords football team was plagued with struggles on the offensive side of the ball against the Earlham College Quakers in Saturday's 25-15 loss. Despite the defense keeping the Lords in the mix through much of the game, Kenyon posted just 221 yards of total offense and took in its first loss of the season.
Kenyon (1-1) forced the Quakers into a quick three-and-out on Earlham's first offensive possession but the Lords' first folly of the game cost them a chance at a drive with good field possession when
Nick Gasbarro fumbled the ensuing punt. The Quakers gained possession and then drove inside the 10-yard line before forcing Earlham into a field goal.
On the next Lords possession, the offense again was held to three downs before punting the ball away. Earlham rode the legs of running back Malik Reed through most of the drive, giving him the ball eight times for a total of 27 yards before pounding it in two yards out for the game's first touchdown. Quarterback John Hood then hit Reed on the next play to convert the two-point conversion, giving the hosts an early 11-0 lead.
On the ensuing kickoff,
Brian Hunca gave Kenyon a great start to the drive following a 40-yard return. A personal foul penalty against the Quakers put the Lords 15 yards closer to the endzone and after flipping sides of the field, the Lords took three plays to hit paydirt and get on the board.
Max Boyd completed one of his 10 passes to
Jibri McLean for 17 yards to put them at the 13-yard line. Boyd then connected with
Jack Hanratty the rest of the way for the touchdown.
Jake Genachowski pounded the rock home for the two-point conversion, making for a three-point game.
As time wound down in the first half, the Quakers again relied on Reed to set up a long-distance pass play, resulting in a second touchdown. Earlham ran a two-quarterback package and secondary signal caller Matt Couch went deep to Malcolm Williams from 48 yards out to get another score on the board before the end of the half. When both teams broke for the locker room, Earlham had an 18-8 lead.
Both teams went scoreless in the third quarter as the Kenyon defense bore down and allowed just 80 yards of offense over the quarter. Kenyon made it a three-point game for a second time, 18-15, when a Quakers turnover gave Kenyon great field position to work with.
Ryan Rosen stepped in front of a pass from Couch and took it 18 yards the other way, setting up the Lords on the Earlham 23-yard line. From three yards out, Boyd took it himself for a touchdown.
Another Kenyon turnover, a fumble by
Casey Beaudouin on the first play of a drive with under five minutes remaining, put the Quakers on Kenyon's eight-yard line. Rosen sacked Couch and with an international grounding penalty it put the hosts back to the 15-yard line, but Couch returned fire on the next play and hit Jalen Kenner for his second touchdown pass of the day, putting them up for good.
Boyd finished the day 10-for-26 for just 89 yards through the air. The Lords were not much more successful on the ground as
Blake Calcei led the Lords with a career-high 50 yards on eight carries. Beaudouin went for 40 yards on a team-high 13 rushes. Hunca was the Lords' top receiver with 46 yards on four catches.
The Lords allowed 414 yards of offense to the Quakers but forced three turnovers to keep them in the game.
Reed Franklin had Kenyon's second interception while
Cam Ventling had a fumble recovery.
Reed led the Quakers' rush attack with 80 yards on 30 carries and scored a touchdown. Couch went 16-for-29 in the passing game for 238 yards and two touchdowns.
Kenyon will play in its home opener next Saturday against Ohio Wesleyan University at McBride Field. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. as they look for their second win in conference play. Full coverage will be provided at athletics.kenyon.edu.
