GLASSBORO, N.J. – The Kenyon College volleyball team wrapped up a successful trip Saturday after splitting matches with Penn State Abington and Hunter College in the second and final day of the Rowan University Invitational. Kenyon first delivered a 3-1 victory over Penn State Abington and then suffered a 3-0 setback against Hunter.
The win over Penn State Abington was the Ladies' third in a row and gave the team five wins on the season. Neither of those accomplishments had been reached by a Kenyon team since the 2011 season.
The Kenyon women opened play in the morning by dropping the first set 27-25 to Penn State Abington. After that, the Ladies reeled off set scores of 25-20, 27-25, and 25-17 to rally for the win. In that tight third set, two
Maggie Hudson kills, which surrounded a kill from
Tierney McClure, gave the Ladies the final three points of the set and pulled them from a one-point deficit (25-24) to a two-point win (27-25).
McClure wound up with a team-high 11 kills throughout the match. She also had 15 digs and a pair of service aces.
Katie Goulder contributed eight kills and 14 digs, while
Lauren Kerr added another eight kills. Senior
Hannah Shank racked up 16 assists and 15 digs.
Jensen Shurbert had 19 assists and
Rachael Thorson came through with a season-best 23 digs.
Although the Ladies kept the pressure on during their second match of the day, Hunter managed to escape with a 25-22, 25-23, 25-22 win.
Shank served up another 29 assists against Hunter. That gave her 45 on the day, 331 on the season, and 2,550 for her career. Her career tally ranks third all-time at Kenyon and is 87 assists shy of tying Sarah Brieschke '89 for second place in the Ladies' record book.
McClure led the Kenyon attack again, this time drilling 14 more kills to give her 25 on the day and a team-best 185 kills on the season. Goulder, Kerr, and
Kaitlyn Power each added five kills to the Ladies' total.
Defensively, McClure also led the way with 15 digs. Thorson added eight and Goulder had seven.
The Ladies now return home to host The College of Wooster on Wednesday at 7 p.m. That match will be just the third of the season at Tomsich Arena for the Ladies, who are now 5-18.
Freshman Tierney McClure had a monster day for the Ladies, as she racked up combined
totals of 30 digs, 25 kills, five service aces, and two blocks in two Saturday matches that
rounded out Kenyon's play in the Rowan University Invitational.
