No. 10 Wabash triumphs over Kenyon, 52-10

GAMBIER, Ohio – No. 10 Wabash College remained unbeaten (6-0, 5-0 NCAC) as it rolled by Kenyon College (0-6, 0-5 NCAC) 52-10 Saturday afternoon at McBride Field in a North Coast Athletic Conference football game.

The Little Giants' offense continued its dominating play out-gaining the Lords' offense 425 to 178.  Also, Wabash's defense held Kenyon to 21 net yards rushing.

After being forced to punt on its opening series, Wabash used its next three possessions to take control of the game.

A 44-yard pass from Michael Putko to Drake Christen helped set up the visitors' first touchdown of the contest as Mason Zurek scored on a one-yard run two plays later to give Wabash a 7-0 lead.

Wabash extended its lead to 14-0 on its next possession as Tyler Holmes ran in from one yard out with 5:28 left in the quarter. Three plays earlier, Holmes raced 22 yards to the Kenyon five-yard line to help set up the next score.

The Lords weren't able to respond on their next possession and after an 11-yard punt, Wabash set up offense at the Kenyon 37-yard line. Three plays later Putko hit Houston Hodges on a slant from 19 yards out which moved Wabash's lead to 21-0.

Kenyon's best offensive drive in the first half came after senior linebacker Jack McDonald sack-stripped Little Giants quarterback Connor Rice at the 49-yard line. The Lords followed with a 13-play, 44-yard drive capped off by a Sabi Szimo 24-yard field goal.

The Little Giants were able to respond though on their next possession as they marched 77 yards in nine plays and pushed their lead to 28-3 following a Holmes one-yard touchdown run.

In the second half, Wabash scored touchdowns on three-of-its-first-four possessions and led 52-3 with 7:06 remaining in the third quarter.

There wasn't any quit in the Lords late in the contest as Sam Appel found Brian Hunca for a 35-yard catch to the Wabash one-yard line and the next play Brandon January ran it in.

Appel came in during the fourth quarter and completed 6-of-7 passes for 58 yards. Hunca caught five passes for 92 yards while Ian Bell hauled in eight catches for 51 yards.

Curt Williams and Alex McQuiston led the Kenyon defense with eight tackles each while Marcus Townsend broke up a season-high three passes. Marquis Johnson tallied a sack and two tackles-for-loss. McDonald added seven stops, a sack, a tackle-for-loss and a forced fumble.

The road doesn't get any easier for Kenyon as they next travel to No. 21 Wittenberg University Oct. 25 for a 1 p.m. NCAC game.
