SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Wittenberg University Tigers, ranked No. 20 in the latest American Football Coaches Association national poll, ran for 213 yards and threw for 201 yards en route to a 49-7 North Coast Athletic Conference victory over the Kenyon College Lords on Saturday at Edwards-Maurer Field.
The balanced attack kept the Lords guessing and put the Tigers ahead 14-0 after one quarter and 35-0 at the half. Not only were the team stats balance, but so were the individual stats for Wittenberg (6-1, 6-0 NCAC). Four players ran for 30 yards or more, six different receivers caught at least one pass, and two quarterbacks each racked up 60 or more yards and a touchdown.
For Kenyon, the passing game never really took off. Starter
Jake Bates completed 13-of-29 passes for 76 yards.
Sam Appel added three completions on six attempts for 18 yards. Sophomore receiver
Brian Hunca was once again the main target as he hauled in six of those passes for 38 yards. No other Kenyon receiver had more than two catches. Hunca now has 44 catches for 513 yards on the season.
On the ground,
Brandon January had 33 yards on 13 carries for Kenyon.
Casey Beaudouin added 29 yards on nine carries and
Blake Calcei ran for 23 yards on seven attempts. In all, the Lords ran for 103 yards on 37 carries.
The Lords did what they could to maintain possession and chew up the clock against the Tigers, but that plan was disrupted by a couple of turnovers and just 5-of-15 third-down conversions.
Wittenberg starting quarterback Zack Jenkins tossed two touchdowns in the first quarter. One was an 11-yard pass to Sean Gary and the other was a 17-yard pass to Clay Mangen. In the second quarter, Jenkins kept it going. He scored on a one-yard run and then tossed a 26-yard scoring strike to Jimmy Dehnke. In between those two point-producing plays, the Tigers blocked a 25-yard field goal attempt by Kenyon. Ryan Myers picked up the loose ball and ran it back 84 yards for another Tiger touchdown.
In the third quarter the teams traded touchdowns. Wittenberg back-up quarterback Timmy Bates fired a 29-yard touchdown pass to Corey Stump. Kenyon then got on the board for the first time with a three-yard touchdown run from Bates. That play capped off an 11-play, 61-yard drive that covered nearly six minutes of game time.
Timmy Bates then finished off all scoring with a two-yard touchdown run to close out a 12-play, 71-yard drive.
On the defensive side of the ball, Kenyon junior
Alexander McQuiston led the way. He recorded a team-high 10 tackles, broke up two Wittenberg passes, and forced a fumble.
Jack McDonald, who had four tackles, recovered the fumble.
Nicholas LaPoint had two tackles, including the Lords' lone sack.
Kenyon (0-7, 0-6 NCAC) will return home next weekend to host the Allegheny College Gators (1-6, 1-5 NCAC) in a game that kicks off at noon.
