GAMBIER, Ohio – Kenyon College ran for a season-high 265 yards and converted 6-of-8 fourth-down attempts to down Allegheny College 35-24 Saturday afternoon in a North Coast Athletic Conference football game at McBride Field.
The win was Kenyon's first of the season.
Allegheny jumped out to the first lead of the game just two minutes into the contest on a five-play, 79-yard drive highlighted by Nick Deichler's 70-yard scamper to the one-yard line.
The Lords responded though on the ensuing possession.
Brandon January got the first carry of the game and it was for 17 yards, signaling what would come for the Kenyon offense throughout the rest of the matchup. Kenyon marched on a 10-play, 71-yard drive converting one 4th-down attempt before a swing pass to January from eight yards out helped tie the game at 7.
On the next drive for the Gators, they seemed poised to take another lead but on their 10th play of the drive that started at their own 27-yard line, Derrick Emick was leveled by Kenyon's
Alexander McQuiston resulting in a fumble and turnover.
The 7-7 score remained at the end of the first quarter before the Lords struck again.
Four plays after January broke off a 38-yard run,
Jake Bates ran in from four yards out and
Szabi Simo followed with an extra point giving Kenyon a 14-7 lead with 11:43 left in the half.
Allegheny had its turn to come back on its next drive after stopping Kenyon's offense and getting great field position after a 17-yard punt. Facing 4th-and-three from the Lords' 32-yard line, Jon Nigro found Tyler Smith over the middle for the tying score.
With 7:29 left in the half, Kenyon found one more scoring drive. After January ripped off a 35-yard run, Bates ran for his second touchdown of the game five plays later pushing Kenyon ahead 21-14.
The Gators added one more score on a 42-yard field goal from Ben Ziolkowski to close out the high-scoring first half.
In the second half, Kenyon's first offensive possession got all the way to Allegheny's 28-yard line, but the Lords didn't convert on fourth down resulting in a turnover-on-downs.
Nigro then guided his team's offense on seven-play, 72-yard drive to regain the lead. The highlight of the drive came as Nigro found Andrew Niklaus for a 44-yard catch to the Kenyon 11-yard line and three plays later Deichler ran for his second touchdown bringing the score to 24-21 Allegheny.
It was their final lead of the game.
On the Lords' next possession, arguably their best drive of the year, the offense converted on a pair of fourth downs, including a 24-yard pass to
Blake Calcei for the go-ahead score. Kenyon drove 56 yards in 15 plays to regain the lead 28-24.
Heading to the fourth, the Lords defense buckled down and Calcei added a one-yard touchdown run with 2:15 left to put the game on ice.
After giving up 277 yards to the Gators in the first half, the Lords held the visitors to 103 in the second.
January rushed for a season-high 156 yards on 22 carries while Bates collected 64 rushing yards and two scores.
Greg McIntosh caught four passes for 64 yards as well.
Defensively,
Saxon Justice and McQuiston each had nine tackles while
Nicholas LaPoint had a tackle-for-loss, a sack, a pass breakup, and a blocked punt.
Kenyon will travel next to the College of Wooster November 8 for a 1 p.m. NCAC game.
Blake Calcei (L) and Brandon January were huge contributors in Kenyon's 35-24 victory over Allegheny.
Calcei's 24-yard reception on 4th-and-17 helped the Lords regain the lead in the third quarter, while January
rushed for a season-high 156 yards and caught a touchdown pass.
