SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Kenyon College men's soccer team's 5-0 win at Wittenberg University on Wednesday night, coupled with DePauw University's tie with Wabash College, kept the Lords in sole possession of second place in the North Coast Athletic Conference standings. With one game left in the regular season, the Lords are on the verge of capturing home-field advantage for the first round of next week's NCAC postseason tournament.
Ohio Wesleyan University currently sits atop the conference standings with a 7-0-1 record and 22 points. Kenyon is 6-1-1 with 19 points and Wabash is 5-2-1 with 16 points. With the top four teams advancing to the conference tournament, final seeding will have to wait until Saturday's games are complete. A Kenyon win or tie at Oberlin College on Saturday guarantees the Lords a home game in the conference tournament semifinal round. A Wabash loss or tie at The College of Wooster will also do the trick for Kenyon.
The Lords set up that scene by blowing by the host Tigers Wednesday. Kenyon's first goal developed following a corner kick. When senior
Grant Carney gained possession after the corner, he sent a cross into the box that sophomore
Tony Amolo headed over the goal line for his team-leading 11th score of the season. That stood as the only goal of the half.
In the second stanza, the Lords offense erupted for four more tallies. The first of that quartet came from
Jordan Glassman.
Nate Petrou headed the ball initially and the rebound from that shot came off the Wittenberg goalkeeper and out to Glassman who steered his seventh goal of the season into the back of the net. Glassman now has three goals in his last two games.
Less than four minutes later, senior
Rei Mitsuyama used an assist from
Jeremiah Barnes to launch his shot into the upper left corner of the Tigers' net. That goal, Mitsuyama's third of the season, was followed up by a score for
Woo Jeon, a freshman who also has three goals on the year.
Finally, in the game's 85th minute another freshman,
Henry Myers, put a cap on the scoring with the Lords' fifth goal of the night. It was also Myers' third of the season.
With the win, Kenyon's seventh straight over the Tigers, the Lords pushed their overall record to 14-1-1 and will finish off the regular season Saturday with that 3:30 p.m. contest at Oberlin.
Sophomore Tony Amolo led off Wednesday night's scoring with his 11th goal
of the season. His goal held up as the game-winner in the No. 6-ranked Lords'
5-0 conference triumph at Wittenberg University.
