Kenyon falls in home finale to Ohio Wesleyan

GAMBIER, Ohio – Kenyon College dropped its final home match of the season as Ohio Wesleyan University overcame a slow start to down the Ladies in three sets Wednesday night at Tomsich Arena in a North Coast Athletic Conference volleyball match.

Lauren Kerr's kill in the first set gave Kenyon an early 5-2 lead before OWU reeled off five straight points to gain a 7-5 advantage. That didn't faze Kenyon though as they responded and gained its biggest lead (16-12) after a Katie Goulder service. The rally was short-lived, however, as the Battling Bishops went on a 13-5 run to close the first set and win 25-21. Brianna La Croix had five kills in the set.

In set two, OWU jumped out to a 7-1 lead following a Mercedez Wood ace. The Ladies were down as many as 10 points (20-10) but managed to claw back. Grace Riley finished off a pass from Shurbert to bring the score to 20-16 but that was the closest the home team got as OWU won 25-18.

The third and final set was fantastic early as each team traded points before it was tied at 11. The next three points went Ohio Wesleyan's way however and Kenyon never bounced back. A pair of attack errors from the Ladies helped lift the Battling Bishops to a 14-11 lead. OWU gained its biggest advantage (20-14) after La Croix knocked down her 16th kill of the match. She finished with a match-high 18.

Tierney McClure led Kenyon with eight kills and added four digs. Kerr tallied six kills and tied for a match-high with five block assists. Jensen Shurbert contributed six kills, six digs and 21 assists.

The Ladies close out their season with a pair of matches November 1 at Bethany College (1 p.m.) and Waynesburg University (3 p.m.)
